  • AND YOU

2
Why do BIOLOGISTS care?
  • Outnumber free-living organisms 5 to 1
  • They have been around since beginning
  • They DRIVE evolution
  • They evade our immune systems

3
Why should YOU care?
  • Half of worlds population will get them
  • Americans provide homes to 130 types
  • They evade your immune system
  • No vaccines/sometime no cures
  • Health of family and friends

4
Symbiotic Relationships
  • Mutualism
  • Both organisms benefit from the relationship
  • i.e. bacteria in guts, clownfish in anemone
  • Commensalism
  • one benefits, the other is not affected
  • i.e. spider crab plants seaweed on its back
  • Parasitism
  • One benefits, the other is affected
  • i.e. mosquitos, ticks, intestinal worms

5
Parasite Life Styles
  • Endoparasites
  • Live in host, including gut
  • Examples tapeworm, pinworm, giardia
  • Ectoparasites
  • Live external on host
  • Examples lice, fleas, ticks, leeches
  • They are common vectors (transfer parasites from
    one organism to another)

6
Parasites cause some of most infectious diseases
  • Malaria - 500 million cases/year 1.5 million
    deaths
  • Hookworm - 800 million infected
  • Ascariasis (nematode worm) - 1 billion
    infections/year
  • River blindness (nematode worm)- 30 million
    infected

7
PROTOZOANS (Protozoa are single-celled
eukaryotes)
  • Entamoeba - dysentery
  • Giardia - beaver fever
  • Trichomonas - vaginitis
  • Plasmodium - malaria
  • Trypanosoma - sleeping sickness

8
1. Entamoeba histolyticadysentery
  • An amoeba
  • Can also cause liver abcess
  • Bloody, mucous containing diarrhea

9
2. Giardia lambliabeaver fever
  • Drinking from open water
  • Intestinal discomfort
  • Diarrea - non-bloody

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Foul smelling
  • Itching burning

11
4. Plasmodium vivaxmalaria
  • Most common
  • Vector is mosquito
  • Destroys red blood cells
  • High fever
  • 1 death every 12 seconds (worldwide)

12
Malaria life cycle
13
5. Trypanosoma bruceiAfrican sleeping sickness
  • Vector is tsetse fly
