Title: Waves

1
Waves
  • Section 11.1 The Nature of Waves

2
Waves
  • Electromagnetic radiation http//www.teachersdoma
    in.org/resources/phy03/sci/phys/energy/emspectrum/
    index.html
  • Waves- repeating disturbance or movement that
transfers energy through matter or space
  • Ocean waves, light waves, sound waves
  • Energy is transferred from one molecule to a
    neighboring molecule
  • http//www.teachersdomain.org/resources/lsps07/sci
    /phys/energy/waves/index.html

3
Waves
  • Energy travels in a wave, but the matter stays
does not move from place to place
  • It may move back and forth but end up in about
    the same location
  • What to waves carry?
  • All waves are produced by vibration
  • Up and down motion of your hand holding a rope,
vibration of a voice box or speaker, etc.

4
Waves
  • Medium- the matter through which waves travel
  • Can be solid, liquid, gas, or a combination
  • Sound travels best in gas
  • Ocean waves travel in water
  • Not all waves need a medium- example
    electromagnetic waves- light, radio, heat

5
Mechanical Waves
  • Mechanical waves- waves that can travel only
    through matter
  • Transverse and compressional
  • Transverse waves- matter in the medium moves back
and forth at right angles to the direction that
    the wave travels
  • Example ocean waves
  • Compressional Waves- matter in the medium moves
in the same direction that the wave travels
  • Examples sound waves, a spring that is squeezed
    and released

6
Waves
  • Combination- not purely transverse or
    compressional water waves, Seismic waves
  • Water waves- form due to wind blowing across the
ocean surface- faster and slower, like a
    vibration http//www.teachersdomain.org/resources/
    ess05/sci/ess/watcyc/wavemotion/index.html
  • Size of waves depends on speed, distance, and
    time of wind blowing
