Committee approved your request Request_ to
use isotopes at the University of MS Medical
Center during a meeting held RSC_Date. The
grant proposal is entitled "Title". This
approval is contingent upon the conditions listed
at the conclusion of this letter.

Training for Laboratory Personnel
  • All personnel working with radioactive materials
    must complete safety training
  • Information for Training form collected from
department to verify personnel who are working
    with radioactive materials
  • Videos in the library titled Lab Safety Series
  • Form collected from librarian to be collected and
    sent to Radiation Safety Office
  • Dosimetry ordered if necessary

15
Laboratory Commission
  • After the approval process to use radioactive
materials has been completed the laboratory must
    be prepared
  • Signs
  • Storage facilities
  • Work stations (liner, shields, hoods, etc.)
  • Waste collection
  • PPE

16
Ordering of Radioactive Materials
  • ALL hazardous materials must be ordered on a
    requisition
  • SPPO ORDERS ARE NOT PERMITTED
  • Object code 288 must be used for ordering
radioactive materials, regardless of how low the
    activity is
  • Packages must be surveyed and checked in by
    Radiation Safety
  • If you get package that has not been checked by
us please call and we will come to your lab

17
Radioactive Materials Use in Animals
  • Approval required from IACUC
  • Identify location of use (laboratory or Animal
    Facilities)
  • Determine types of waste
  • Bedding
  • Tissue
  • Carcass
  • Animal activity less than 0.05 µCi per gram is
    not considered radioactive waste
