2The Brass Family
How does a brass instrument work?
3The Parts
Most brass instruments also have VALVES that you
press down to get different pitches.
4Gotta BUZZ!
All brass instruments get played by putting your
mouth against the mouthpiece and buzzing your
lips like this
PbthbpthbFs!
5The Brass Family
The Brass family is known for having a warm sound
that can be used for lots of different kinds of
music.
Lets meet the instruments.
6The Trumpet
7The Trumpet (or Cornet)
- Highest sounding brass instrument
- Made of metal (usually gold or silver colored)
- Has valves
8The French Horn
- Can play high notes too, but usually plays
lower than the trumpet - Darker, mellow sound
- Has valves
- You put your hand inside the bell when you
play.
9The French horn has a royal, mellow sound that is
used in many different types of music. Notice
its teeny mouthpiece and its big bell.
10The Trombone
- Plays in the tenor range, and is considered to
be part of the LOW brass.
11The Trombone
12The Baritone
- This instrument is part of the low brass section
too. - It looks like a mini tuba!
- This one is made of a silver metal but (like all
other brass instruments) it can be any color you
like just as long as you buzz into it.
13The Tuba
- Here is a big one.
- Plays in the bass range with very low notes.
- The lowest sounding brass instrument.
- Has valves

15The Sousaphone
Be careful! This thing looks bigger than the
tuba but it ISNT. It is actually the same
length as the tuba. It just has its tubing wound
up differently.
16The Sousaphone
You can imagine how heavy this baby is!
Sometimes, it is made out of fiberglass so it is
lighter to carry while you march.
17Can you name all these brass instruments?
