While the standard memory controller is still
waiting for the answer of memory chip 2, our
interleaved-controller has already read 4 sets of
data!
10Memory Protection MechanismECC / Memory
Scrubbing
ECCBits
DataBits
ECC memory controller
- With Error Correction Coding (ECC), redundant
bits are added at write and tested at read. In
case of a single bit failure, the content is
corrected on its way to the CPU. With full ECC,
the corrected data is also rewritten.
- With Memory Scrubbing, all memory cells are read
out cyclically by a background process. In case
of a single bit failure, this is corrected via
ECC thus preventing accumulation of failures to
multi bit errors.
11Memory Protection Mechanism Chipkill
- In standard memory designs, the memory controller
writes the bits in just one memory chip. If a bit
fails, ECC corrects it, if a memory-chip fails,
you loose your data!
- The Chipkill-memory-design has got an own
Chipkill-processor on the main board (part of
chipset!), just to calculate the
bit-distribution the controller allocates bits
on different memory chips. If a memory chip
fails, you just lose one bit, which can be
corrected via ECC!
12Memory Protection Mechanism Hot-spare Memory
- Example PRIMERGY RX300
- Module 3 of bank 3 has exceeded the threshold for
the number of single bit corrections - In this case BIOS initiates the copy of the whole
bank 3 to bank 1 during normal operation. - On scheduled maintenance phases the defective
module can be replaced. - This is a high availability add -on to Memory
Scrubbing, ECC and Chipkill functionalities.

14RAID Functionality
15RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) for
secure hard disk data
- RAID level 0 (disk striping)
- Several disks are added to one big logical hard
disk - The OS only sees the big hard disk
- Performance optimisation without critical data
- RAID level 1 disk mirroring
- Mirroring of one hard disk
- If one disk fails, it is possible to replace it
without loosing data - Fast read (access on both disks)
- You need 2x the usable capacity
- Typical use mirroring of system disk
- RAID level 5 striping with parity
- Min. of 3 hard disks in RAID-5 array
- Part of each disk is used for parity information
of the others - In case of a dead device, no data will be lost
all information from the defect drive is stored
in the parity and data area of the other disks - Lower down times with hot-spare disk within the
RAID-5 array - 33 less capacity in case of 3 HDDs(25 if 4
HDDs are used and so on..) - Typical usage data hard disks
16RAID Functionality onchip and onboard
Extension
- Onchip RAID (HostRAID)
- Onboard SCSI controller with RAID functionality
(level 0, 1, 10) - For mirroring the internal hard disks over 1
respectively 2 channels - Based on Ultra160 or Ultra320 SCSI technology
- Identical management software as the onboard RAID
extension (ZCR)
- Onboard RAID extension (ZCR)
- The Zero Channel RAID controller
- provides RAID functionality for the onboard SCSI
controller or extends the RAID functionality of
the onboard RAID controller - It is a PCI card (low profile) providing RAID
level 0, 1, 10, 5 and 50 - Supports 2-channel SCSI controller and the well
known administration (Storage Manager) - Uses the Embedded RAID Logic (EMRL) on the system
board for communication with the SCSI/RAID-Chip
and the corresponding SCSI channels
17Server Management
18Top Remote Management Features

PRIMERGY Servers - Remote control in any system state, at any time,
from any location - Remote control via modem, SNMP, HTTP or Telnet

49PRIMERGY RXI600
- 4-way Itanium 2 Rack Server
5032-Bit Where is the problem?
- With 32-Bit processors, operating systems and
applications all references to memory locations
handled by the application are limited to 32-bit. - This limits the size of applicable memory
- An application can manage max. 4 Gigabyte for its
data. The OS may further reduce this, e.g. to 2
or 3 Gigabyte. - As long as the amount of required data an
application manages in memory is smaller, there
is no problem. - If the demand grows beyond this barrier, there is
no easy way to cope with this. In the 32-bit
environment this will make a substantial change,
if not a reimplementation of the application is
necessary. - Often applications are prepared to offload data
to disk to limit the size of data kept in memory.
However this will lead to significant performance
degradation. - 64-Bit operation will require a re-compilation of
the application, but will signifi-cantly improve
performance to applications handling substantial
amount of data in memory
