Title: Total Coliform Rule

1
Total Coliform Rule
2
What is a Coliform Sampling Plan?
3
Types of Coliform Samples
  • Routine
  • Representative of water that people are drinking
  • Taken from a site on your coliform sample plan
  • Repeat
  • Taken after notification of positive routine
    sample
  • Special
  • Taken for systems own information to verify if
sample tap is good, from a pipeline after
    construction, etc.
  • Not representative of water in entire system
  • Does not need to be reported to DWP

4
Sampling Techniques
  • Sample Location Use a non-swivel faucet, remove
all attachments aerator, screen, hose, etc.
  • Flush the line for 3 to 5 minutes
  • Dont open the sample bottle until ready to fill,
dont touch the inside of the bottle or lid, and
    dont rinse
  • Reduce the water flow to a steady stream and
gently fill bottle, leave an air space of at
least one-half inch at the top, and replace the
    lid
  • Deliver to the lab immediately keep the sample
refrigerated or on ice if keeping longer than 2
    hours
  • Labs cannot process samples older than 30 hours

5
If Total Coliforms Are Present
  • Call the County or State DWP
  • Repeat samples must be collected w/in 24 hrs of
notification of a positive routine sample
  • Number of Repeat samples required
  • Systems taking 1 or less routine per month 4
  • Systems taking 2 or more routines per month 3

6
If Total Coliforms Are Present (cont.)
  • Repeat Sample Locations
  • One from the original tap
  • One within 5 service connections upstream
  • One within 5 service connections downstream
  • If 4 repeats are required, one from another
location in the system, preferably at the source

7
Repeat Sampling Results
  • If all repeat samples are coliform negative,
    problem is resolved
  • Just remember at least 5 routine samples must
be collected during the month following a
    positive sample
  • If any of the repeat samples are coliform
positive, the system violates the total coliform
MCL - corrective action and public notice is
    required
  • (Note The MCL for systems collecting 40 or more
routine samples per month is 5 of samples
    collected)

8
Filling Out the Lab Slip
  • Fill out the lab slip completely.
  • If we dont recognize the water system name, or
the water system ID is wrong, the system will
not receive credit for the test
  • Mark the Sample Type routine, repeat or
    special
  • For repeat samples, indicate if the repeat was
collected at the same tap, upstream, downstream
    or other location

9
Routine Sampling
  • Number of samples and frequency based on system
    type and size

10
Coliform Sampling Plan
  • Every water system should have a written coliform
sampling plan, even if your lab collects the
    sample.
  • It should include the following basic elements
  • A brief description of coliform sampling
    requirements
  • A list of routine corresponding repeat sample
    sites
  • Rotation schedule of sample collection
  • Sample collection procedures
  • A distribution map showing locations of water
    sources, storage facilities, and sampling
    locations
