THE SARNO RIVER
Il fiume Sarno si sviluppa in Campania, regione
dellItalia meridionale.
The Sarno river is in the Campania region of
Italy.

The Sarno is 24 Km long, and its basin covers 500
sq.Km, an area confined by Picentini mountain
range, the Salerno range, the Lattari range, and
Somma-Vesuvius volcano.
Il Sarno è lungo 24km e il suo bacino copre 500
Kmq, unarea delimitata dalla catena montuosa
Picentina, dalla catena montuosa di Salerno,
dalla catena montuosa dei Lattari e dal vulcano
Vesuvio.

The Sarno is the most polluted river in Italy.
The situation is aggravated by large-scale
dumping of untreated agricultural and industrial
waste into the river. Additionally, the area is
also tormented by frequent flooding and mudslides
Il Sarno è il fiume più inquinanto dItalia. La
situazione è aggravata dallo scarico su grande
scala di rifiuti agricoli ed industriali nel
fiume. Inoltre, la zona è tormentata anche dalle
frequenti inondazioni e lave di fango.

The manmade drainage canals and sewers along the
length of the river, meant to handle run-off from
rainwater by channeling it into the river, are
also frequently clogged with debris and even
cemented over in some places, thus increasing the
flood risk even more

I canali e le fogne artificiali di drenaggio,
realizzati per smaltire lacqua piovana
incanalandola nel fiume, sono anche
frequentemente ostacolati da detriti e perfino in
alcuni posti cementati, aumentando il rischio di
inondazione.

Pollution levels "evolve" along the length of the
Sarno. A few kilometers  farther along, however,
at the confluence with the Cavajola river and the
Solofrana river, the pollution picks up and is
visible.In Scafati there is chimical foam in the
water as you can see in this photo.
I livelli di inquinamento crescono lungo il corso
del Sarno. Ad alcuni chilometri dalla sorgente,
oltre la confluenza con il fiume Cavajola ed il
fiume Solofrana, l'inquinamento aumenta ed è
visibile. Allaltezza di Scafati, come si nota
dallimmagine, cè schiuma chimica sulla
superficie del corso dacqua.

In the future the plan is to clean up the entire
the length of the river plus the tributaries for
a total of 170 km of waterway.
In futuro il programma è di pulire l'intero
lunghezza del fiume e degli affluenti per una
lunghezza totale di 170 chilometri.
