2What is Baptism?
- One of the 7 sacraments.
- First sacrament of initiation.
- Special ceremony to welcome a new member into the
Catholic Church.

3ORDER OF SERVICE
- This means exactly what it says
- The service runs to a set pattern and in a
particular order.

4RECEPTION
- At entrance to church.
- Priest welcomes child, parents, etc.
- To baptismal font.
- Questions god-parents.
- Sign of cross on childs forehead.

5Celebration of Word of God
- Often during Mass.
- Bible readings.
- Bidding prayers for child, parents and
god-parents. - Prayer to saint that child may be being named
after.

6EXORCISM and ANOINTING
Cast out devils in my name Child freed from
control of evil forces. Retains free
will. Anointed with oil of catechumens. (A
catechumen is a person preparing for
baptism.) Symbolises Strength and Healing.

7BAPTISMAL PROMISES
Child is taken to font. (Usually at front of
church) Congregation act as witnesses. Water is
blessed. Parents/god-parents renew
faith. Baptismal promises. (Apostles
Creed) This is our faith. This is the faith of
the Church. We are proud to profess it in Christ
Jesus our Lord.

8ACTUAL BAPTISM
Water poured three times over childs
forehead. I baptise you in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit. Learn Mt 2818-20

9ANOINTING WITH CHRISM
Second anointing. This oil will be used at
confirmation and ordination. Oil used at
coronation of monarchs. In Old Testament,
prophets, priests and kings were anointed.
(Remember the young David and the prophet
Samuel.) Symbolises Being set aside for a
special task in life.

10WHITE GARMENT
Priest places a white garment - usually a shawl
around the child. White is associated with
innocence and purity.

11BAPTISMAL CANDLE
Given to one of the parents. Lit from Paschal
Candle. (Paschal Candle first lit at Easter Vigil
and reminds us of the Resurrection.) Receive
the light of Christ .

12CONCLUSION
- If not celebrated during a Mass, the Our Father
is said. - Then follows three blessings
- One for mother.
- One for father.
- One for all present.
