Title: Donor Quarterly
1 Donor Quarterly
A look at whats flowing at the MSU VTH Blood
Donor Program
Meet the Blood Donor Chicks
Donor Of The Quarter Hi! My name is Luke Baltz.
I am a five year old Shepard Mix and I have been
donating to the program since March of 2001! I
was rescued from the animal shelter and brought
to MSU VTH to begin donation when I met my new
mom! It was love at first sight for both of us
? I have donated 25 times, saving 50 lives!!! I
am slightly shy, but I warm up to everyone and
dont have a mean bone in my body! The ladies at
the donor ward are very proud of me and all that
I have accomplished! In my spare time, when not
saving lives, I enjoy walking with my mom. We
usually walk 3-4 miles everyday!!! I also love
kids which make me and my mom so compatible she
works at a Day Care! I LOVE when she takes me to
work with her so I can play with all the children
there! I also enjoy spending time with my best
dog friend she is my best pal (besides my mom)!
One of my favorite things to eat is my moms
cooked chicken ? It is by far the best! The
Blood Donor Program is very happy to introduce
Luke Baltz, this seasons Donor Of The Quarter!
Congratulations!!!
Alice graduated from Wayne County Community
College with an Associates degree in Veterinary
Technology in 1979. She has worked at the VTH
since 1979, working in ICU and with the blood
donor program. In March of 2004 Alice dropped to
½ time here at the MSU blood donor program and
started ½ time at a local blood bank, Midwest
Animal Blood Services. Being able to work with
blood donors full time is a long time dream come
true for her. When Alice is not working she goes
home to a busy household of 5 children ages,
13yrs to 9 months, 3 dogs and 2 cats. She also
enjoys gardening,sewing,and beading.
Rose is a graduate of the Veterinary Technology
program here at Michigan State University.  She
has worked in the Intensive Care Unit of the
Veterinary Teaching Hospital for the past 10
years.  Rose joined the Blood Donor team a year
ago and has enjoyed getting to know and work with
all the wonderful blood donors and their owners.Â
After splitting her work time between the
Intensive Care Unit and the Blood Bank, Rose goes
home to play with her 2 children, 3 horses, 2
dogs, and 8 cats.

_______
Sophie Pohl came into the VTH on January 5th,
2005 with a severe case of Red Cell Aplasia.
This is a condition in which the young red blood
cell in the bone marrow are nearly absent!
Sophie had a form which was found to be
non-regenerative, which means that the body was
not making red blood cells on its own. During
this time Sophie was not feeling well, was very
weak, and was actually licking metallic objects
in order to get some form of iron into her body!
It was one of the most extreme cases we have seen
here at the VTH. Dr.Ari Jutkowitz was her doctor
here at the VTH. He performed multiple blood
transfusions (the staff affectionately awarding
her the nickname of the little vampire) every
month 13 blood transfusions in all! Beyond our
regular donors, we even had to order blood from
Texas for her! Dr. Jutkowitz never gave up on
her though. During her stay, he performed a
transfusion of human immunoglobulins, which is a
new procedure in cats. This, combined with the
blood (and all the love and care provided to her
by the staff), allowed her cells to begin
regenerating and thus led to a full recovery! We
are pleased to announce that Sophie is at home
now doing wonderfully! She is playing with her
housemate,
Evie, and acting like a normal feline again!
Gone
are her days of being our little vampire,
and we couldnt be happier for her ?
