JCMT Instruments
  • SCUBA dual-wavelength submillimetre bolometer
array operating at 850µm 450µm with 2 arcmin
    field of view
  • RxA single-polarization, dual sideband
heterodyne receiver covering 230 GHz band
  • RxB dual-polarization, single sideband
heterodyne receiver covering the 345 Ghz band
  • RxW dual-polarization, single sideband
heterodyne receiver covering the 460/490 GHz and
    690 GHz band.

Operations
  • A 16-hour on-the-sky operation is supported
nightly by a telescope system specialist and a
    visiting observer.
  • Programs are dynamically scheduled observations
are selected based on the TAC priority and
current weather conditions five bands 1(best)
    5 (worst).
  • Observing time is divided over the three partner
countries, the U.K. (55), Canada (25), and The
Netherlands (20), after allocation of a share to
the Univ. of Hawaii (10) and international
    observers (10).
  • The JCMT is operated on behalf of the three
partner countries by the Joint Astronomy Centre
(JAC) which is based in Hilo (the JAC also
operates the United Kingdom Infra Red Telescope,
    UKIRT).

OMP Principles Requirements
  • Dynamically scheduled, service-mode observations
will(!) at minimum result in data equal in
quality to those of an average experienced
    observer
  • Intense feedback loop with P.I.
  • same level of interactive control as classical
observing to ensure quality but also to maintain
    spirit of ground-based observing.

Procedures and Tools must ensure feedback!
Telescope Agnostic Software !

  • Stringent quality control.
  • complication external observers since youll
lack the necessary staff. This observer can be
    inexperienced!

Procedures and Tools must ensure quality!

OMP Observation Management Software Suitemain
components
  • Observing Tool (JCMT-OT) Phase-II observations
tool for science program submission to OM
    database.
  • Query Tool (JCMT-QT) Observation Query tool
presents a ranked list of observations
schedulable given the time of the night, current
weather conditions, and program and instrument
    constraints.
  • Observations as defined by PI are directly
submitted to the telescope control system.

8
OMP Observation Management Software Suitemain
components (cont.)
  • Pipeline (ORAC-DR) Sophisticated pipeline that
    provides real-time co-adding, analysis, and
    visualization of observations. Enables immediate
    quality control, observation assessment, and
    completion checks.
  • Feedback System Observer log, shift log,
    thumb-nail images (WORF), project progress
    administration, time accounting, fault tracking,
secure data downloads, logging of emails between
PIs and local support staff. Real-time and
near-time feedback and full archiving of
    meta-data.

Mantra If things are going predictably right, no
staff should have to do anything. Neither if
things are going predictably wrong. Requires
total machine readability at every stage of the
project lifecycle. Rely on people to assess
science, dont rely on them for grunge-work.

ORAC-DR Pipeline Features Automation
  • Its a pipeline - no interaction required near
    real-time
  • Determines observing mode and executes a default
recipe or one specified by the observer
  • Combines observations of the same
    source/wavelength/mode

24
PipelineOff-line use
  • Runs off-line as well as on-line
  • Is used for determining calibration history of
the telescope and for blazar monitoring.
  • Has been used to automatically reduce all skydip
    observations from the archive
