• A discrepancy means an AToN is not doing what it
  is supposed to, or isnt where it should be.
• ANY Auxiliarist can report ANY discrepancy !
• Doesnt need to be AV qualified
• Doesnt need to be crew qualified
• Doesnt need to be on patrol
• Doesnt need to be on the water
• Does need to report the discrepancy promptly !
• Can receive AUXDATA credit for discrepancies

REPORT DISCREPANCIES PROMPTLY !

• ANYTHING lighted is critical.
• Critical reported by VHF or landline
• Buoys are less critical.
• The cutters want to know so they can make command
  decisions.
• The COE charts are ALWAYS wrong.
• Use your local knowledge and common sense
  reporting buoys.

MORE ON BUOYS

• Buoys in the Light List may be considered
  critical. They often mark obstructions.
• Bouys are placed for radar signature at bridge
  piers. Here the COE charts are helpful.
• Not a buoy at EVERY bridge pier.
• Off station Use common sense. If it is obvious
  report it on shore, etc.
• Not watching properly. Sinking, damaged, etc.
• High river stage submarining.

• Youll need to practice. Youll make mistakes as
  we all do.
• Once youre familiar with the process, its
  pretty easy.
• Even w/o a computer, its still easier than it
  used to be - a lot less filling in the blanks
  over and over.
• Eventually, youll be able to input data
  directly.

• Entry into AUXDATA makes it official.
• DIRAUX tracks quals for AVs.
• DSO tracks data for National report.
• Website will have graphics for comparison.

REPORTING PAToNs

• DISCREPANCIES AND VERIFICATIONS are reported.
• Electronically using the MS Excel master form
  from D8 HQ. Fill in the appropriate fields.
• If MS Excel doesnt work. Use a paper copy. Note
  the data in any format. Dont print out a new
  sheet for every report.
• In e-mail format, LL Number of PAToN, who did and
  when, discrepant or verified.

• Uses NOAA Form 77-5
• Cant be double-dipped
• Only one Auxiliarist gets credit
• Report must eventually get to DSO-AN 8ER
• DSO-AN will forward copies to USACE

• Read instructions
• Ignore numbers 2 and 3 under USE OF THIS FORM
• Under SUGGESTED ITEMS TO REPORT, pay especial
  attention to numbers 5 and 6.
• Pertaining to number 6, report elctronically to
  SO-I. Then fill out 77-5 and forward to DSO-AN
• Dont expect to see changes in USACE charts for
  some time

BRIDGE NOTES

• No matter how many lights are discrepant, each
  bridge counts for only ONE (1) discrepancy report
  to AUXMIS.
• Bridge discrepancies do NOT have to done under
  orders (or from a vessel, for that matter).
• Extinguished lights are considered critical and
  must be reported ASAP.
• Check back to see if bridge is watching
  properly.

• Date/time discrepancy was noted.
• Reason aid is discrepant (BE SPECIFIC!)
• Discrepancy location
• Name, address, phone number of reporter

NIGHT PATROLS

• Night patrols need to planned in advance
• Authority to operate at night comes from
  Commander (GOHV) in advance
• Coxswains shall work through flotillas and
  division to obtain permission
• SO-Ops can fax or e-mail Group Operations Officer
  at mchadwick_at_gruohiovalley.uscg.mil for approval
• Verification may also be performed during evening
  multi-mission patrols

• Do the everyday PAToNs first. Those on your
  assigned AOR.
• Insure adequate crew to safely perform the
  mission
• Remember the Five P PlanPrior Planning
  Prevents Poor Performance PLAN!

  verify light characteristics
