Title: SCIENTIFIC SUPPLEMENT PROJECT
1(No Transcript)
2SCIENTIFIC SUPPLEMENT PROJECT
3What is it?
- The Scientific Supplement Project was established
in order to provide European pharmaceutical
students the opportunity to publish their
research papers and abstracts. - It will be published as a supplement to the EPSA
Newsletter.
4What are our aims?
- Bring more Pharmaceutical Sciences inside EPSA,
and consequently to pharmacy students - Promote the interest for this specific issue as
an important basis for the pharmacy profession - Give students the possibility of publishing
their research projects in an international
publication - Contribute to the exchange of knowledge and
information on this specific issue - Create a network of interest in the
Pharmaceutical Sciences -
5How to participate?
- Prepare an abstract or paper on your research
according to the submission guidelines which are
available on EPSAs homepage www.epsa-online.org - The research can be from a wide range of areas in
the Pharmaceutical Sciences incorporating a
number of areas in drug discovery and drug
delivery.
6Areas of Research include
- Medicinal chemistry
- Pharmacology
- Drug absorption and metabolism, Pharmacokinetics
and pharmacodynamics - Pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis,
- Drug delivery including gene delivery,
- Drug targeting,
- Pharmaceutical technology,
- Pharmaceutical biotechnology and clinical drug
evaluation

Determination of Immunological levels in Patients
Treated for Neurological Disorders Author
Michael Gafà Establishment Department of
Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics,
University of Malta and St. Lukes Hospital,
Malta Objectives The aim of this study is an
immunological approach to epilepsy. This approach
is confined to the depressive effect of selected
anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) upon the immune
system, and to determine the effect of AEDs on
lymphocyte proliferation in vitro. Design A
total of 29 patients on old/new AEDs were
identified so as to carry out a comparative study
on the Ig depressing effects of the traditional
AEDs and new AEDs . The other aspect of the study
was to carry out in vitro assays to establish
whether such drugs are able to stimulate or
inhibit lymphocyte proliferation in incubated
cell cultures. Setting Patients blood samples
were collected by qualified health care
professionals at St. Lukes Hospital (SLH), or at
their own residence. The analytical work was
carried out in the laboratory of the Department
of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Main
outcome measures A number of patients were
identified at the Neurology clinic at SLH. Other
patients were identified at their own residence.
Immunoturbidimetric kits were used for
determination of IgA, IgG, and IgM levels.
Varying concentrations of pure AED solutions
including vigabatrin, gabapentin, and
phenobarbitone were used in the proliferation
assays. Results Compared to the controls, the
mean plasma IgA levels were lower for both group
A and group B patients. The same does not hold
true for IgM and IgG levels where no significant
differences (pgt0.05) were detected between groups
A and B and the controls. The three proliferation
assays show that the selected AEDs used, tended
to produce an immuno stimulatory effect in an
incubated cell culture for a period of 72
hours. Conclusion Although the sample size was
small, these results seem to correlate well with
published data. A broader based study would
definitely help to confirm the indicated trends.
It would be preliminary from these limited
results to state categorically that the selected
AEDs will stimulate lymphocyte proliferation in
vitro as only three donors were used.
Example
10 Scientific Supplement Submission
- Follow the submission guidelines as detailed on
the EPSA homepage - Submit the abstract or article by February 1st
2003 to the EPSA Permanent office
EPSA_at_stevenshof.nl - Articles and abstracts will be evaluated by a
Scientific Committee which include senior
professionals nominated by the European
Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences (EUFEPS)
11 Scientific Supplement Submission
- Successful submissions will gain one point
towards the EPSA Lifelong Learning Certificate
2003. - Further guidance is available from Project
Co-ordinator Ece Bilge zeb300_at_hotmail.com - Good luck and get involved!
