Introduction
Project background Mountaineering is fast
becoming a highly popular sport. Giving people a
reason to explore the worlds more remote regions.
The sport of mountaineering takes a lot of
experience strength and bravery to climb some of
the hardest, highest and most demanding
mountains. The sport is naturally very dangerous
with accidents and mistakes often resulting in
death. The increase in the number of people
committing to the sport means that more and more
accidents occur each year. This coursework
project aims to highlight a particular aspect of
mountaineering that causes accidents/mistakes and
design and build a prototype product which will
minimise risk or give a warning of danger.

So what next? (project analysis) This project
requires me to research the reasons for accidents
and highlight aspects that I might have a
positive impact on. I think at this stage that
working with an experienced mountaineer as well
as the BMC would be the best option, this way I
can ensure that the product is practical and user
friendly. It is clear at this stage that any
product used in the mountains must be waterproof
and lightweight. However working a mountaineer
will allow me to understand the specification
better. I will generate a client specific design
brief once I have contacted a mountaineer.

Design Brief
The Project brief States that the product must
sense a problem in the mountaineers activity and
warn the user. Thus preventing an accident. As
mentioned in the introduction , understanding the
particular needs of the mountaineer as well as
the common hazards or errors requires me to
discuss the project with those that understand
the problem. In this case I have chosen to
contact both BMC and top mountain adventure
company JAGGED GLOBE. By interviewing these
using the questions shown below I was able to
reach devise the full and detailed design brief
found here on this page.

The design brief The following design brief is a
combination of the AQA coursework brief and the
inspiring and thought provoking discussion with
my client. I am to design and produce a
prototype product which will minimise the risk of
falling whilst climbing. The product should alert
the climber/mountaineer of a failure in the
system. The product should minimise the human
error to climbing and therefore reduce
fatalities. For practical use the product should
be suitable for the mountainous environments in
which it will be used. The product must be
Lightweight, highly visible, and easy to use with
cold weather gloves and clothing. It is essential
that the product does not make the process of
climbing any harder or dangerous. The product
must be suitable for use by expert and novice
alike. The weight and use of ancillaries
(batteries etc) must be kept to a minimum so as
to minimise weight. The product must be ready
for trial by Christmas 2009.

There are very few products which meet the
mountaineering market that I am looking to
exploit. some examples are the AVALUNG from Black
Diamond which lengthens the amount of time that
an avalanche victim can survive buried in the
snow by taking the oxygen trapped in the snow and
releasing it as a suitable from for human
respiration. Another is an avalanche rescue
beacon which transmits a signal from a buried
climber allowing a rescue team to find them.

Page evaluation This page has been useful
because I now understand the project a lot
better. I have highlighted that the project could
either be a rescue based product or preventative
product. The problem with rescue is that the
victim may have to activate the product.
Preventative products should minimises the risk
of danger in the first place. Training like in
all education is the best way of preventing
accidents. I want to elaborate on the BMC
climbing wall sign. Looking at ways of
interfacing climbing with a check then climb
system. The products on this page have also
highlighted the level of durability, ruggedness,
and waterproofing that my product will require.

Methods of powering my product
I now know that my product will be used as a
training aid to educate and minimise the number
of accidents and fatalities caused by not
checking the know and belay system before
starting to climb. The product will be used
indoors at climbing walls and could be used by
climbing instructors outdoors at local crags or
even single pitch ice falls . This means that my
product must be powered by a means which can be
used in both environments. This page will
