2
What is the Pythagorean Theorem?
  • The Theorem that the sum of the squares of the
lengths of the sides of a right triangle is equal
to the square of the length of the hypotenuse.

3
Basic Terms A Triangle
  • A basic shape in geometry A polygon with 3
    corners and 3 sides.

SIDE
4
Basic Terms A Right Triangle
  • A right triangle is a one that has one angle that
    is 90 .

5
The lengths of the legs are usually called a and
b.
6
The length of the hypotenuse
is usually labeled c.
7
The Pythagorean Theorem says, given the right
triangle with legs a and b and hypotenuse c,
8
then
9
General Terms What is it used for
  • If there is a right triangle with 2 known side
    lengths.
  • Then with the Theorem you can calculate the 3rd
    side.

10
Quick Notes
  • A and B in the Pythagorean Theorem are the two
remaining sides. No specific side for either
    variable.
  • C in the Pythagorean Theorem is always the
    hypotenuse.
  • Review The hypotenuse is the side opposite of
the right angle in a right triangle.
