THE SOUTHEAST REGION
  • The Southeast is a region rich in resources.
Its wide rivers play an important role in the
life of the region. Farmers produce abundant
crops in the warm climate. Valuable coal lies
    beneath the ground.
  • Rivers such as the Mississippi have helped to
shape life in the Southeast. The Mississippi has
been an important route for transportation and
trade. The Great Smoky Mountains are part of the
Appalachian Range. They get their name from the
mist that hangs over them. The mist comes from
the moisture released by the trees.
  • A warm climate and rain are good for
agriculture. Good growing conditions led the
Southeasts farmers to grow cash crops.
  • The space industry is important in the economy
of the Southeast. Huntsville, Alabama is
sometimes known as Rocket City. It was here
that a team of scientists planned the rockets
that carried astronauts to the moon in the 1960s.
Another key part of our countrys space program
is found in Florida. Space shuttles are launched
    at the Kennedy Space Center.

5
The Cherokee were one of the many Native
American peoples who lived in the Southeast.
Sequoyah developed a way to write the Cherokee
language. English colonists began to elect
government leaders. The United States government
forced the Cherokee off their lands. Thomas
Jeffersons Declaration of Independence was not
enough to free the colonies from English rule.
That took years of fighting in the American
Revolution. Later, the new countrys citizens
remembered Jeffersons leadership. They elected
him the third president of the United States in
1800 and again in 1804. The issues of slavery
and states rights divided the nation for many
years. With all of its death and destruction,
the Civil War brought slavery to an end. The
North and South became one country again. After
the Civil War, African Americans did not enjoy
the same rights as whites. The Civil Rights
Movement helped all Americans gain their equal
rights. The economy of the Southeast now
includes manufacturing and services, as well as
agriculture.

THE northEAST REGION
  • Native Americans, such as the Iroquois, were the
    first Northeasterners. Later, immigrants from
all over the world arrived. They helped make the
Northeast a busy region of crowded cities.
  • The four seasons in the Northeast affect the
people who live there all year round. The
climate brings its variety in four very different
seasons. Temperatures change from very high in
summer to very low in winter. The Northeast
climate supports forests of both broadleaf and
    needleleaf trees. Forest-covered mountains and
green rolling hills give the Northeast great
    natural beauty.
  • The rivers that flow from the Appalachian
Mountains once supplied power for manufacturing
in early factories. Many factories were built on
the riverbanks. In this way, the mountains
helped make the Northeast the region it is today.
The Appalachian Trail is the longest marked
footpath in the world. The Appalachians were
formed millions of years ago and shaped by
    glaciers in the Northeast.
  • The Atlantic Ocean is an important resource in
the Northeast, for many different fish are caught
in areas such as the Chesapeake Bay.
  • The Iroquois Confederacy was one of the most
powerful Native American groups in the Northeast.
It brought six different Native American groups
into a union. Similarly, the 50 states of the
United States form one country. Decisions that
concern the whole country are made by the
national government in Washington, D.C. Some
historians think that the Iroquois Confederacy
may have provided a model for the government of
    our country.

THE middle west REGION
  • The Middle West is a region of fertile land and
wide plains. Corn and wheat grow in fields as
far as the eye can see. The regions northern
hills supply most of our countrys iron.
    Factories produce steel and automobiles.
  • The Lakota were among the first Native Americans
to settle in this region. Later, young Abraham
Lincoln arrived. Like many pioneer families, his
family was attracted by large areas of land for
    sale.
  • The Central Plains are low and have plenty of
rain. The Great Plains are drier and slope
upward toward the west. The flat land of this
    region is good for farming.
  • The Middle Wests climate is affected by the
regions distance from the ocean. The cold
winters and hot summers have a big effect on
farming. One way people adapted to the extreme
climate was to build indoor shopping malls. The
Mall of America is the countrys largest indoor
mall. It even contains an amusement park.
  • Today the steel industry employs fewer people in
the Middle West than it did in the past. Yet the
growth of this industry had a permanent effect on
the region. It helped to make the Middle West
not only an agricultural region, but also a
center for mining and manufacturing. It brought
a new way of life to millions of people.
  • As pioneers flooded the Middle West, conflicts
arose with the Native Americans who already lived
there. The Battle of Little Bighorn occurred in
1876 between Colonel Custer, Sitting Bull, and
Chief Crazy Horse. Despite the Lakota victory,
    they were forced to surrender.

THE SOUTHwEST REGION
  • The Southwest is still known for its rich land
and open spaces. Beautiful deserts and colorful
canyons are part of this regions landscape.
Resources beneath the ground provide a living for
    many Southwesterners.
  • The Pueblo were the first people to live in the
Southwest. They were joined by the Navajo.
Later, Spanish colonists settled in the region.
Then settlers from the East arrived. Today the
Southwest is a growing region that continues to
    attract newcomers.
  • Natural features, such as the Grand Canyon, are
valuable to America in many different ways.
Erosion has carved canyons, mesas, buttes, and
other landforms out of the Earths surface.
Colorado Plateau is a strange rock formation
rising from the floor of Monument Valley in
Arizona. The Rio Grande flows out of the Rocky
Mountains to form the border between the Untied
States and Mexico. It flows through Big Bend
    National Park in Texas.
  • Plants and animals survive in the desert by
adaptation. In the 1930s droughts and farming
methods caused the Dust Bowl. Irrigation and dry
farming allow farmers to grow crops in dry areas.
  • Petroleum made a big contribution to the
Southwest. It also helped to build the economy
and the way of life in our country.
  • The Southwest has a larger population of Native
Americans than any other region. The Navajo are
the largest group of all. About 180,000 Navajo
live in Dineth. Although desert life has
changed, the Navajo keep many of the traditions.
  • The Southwest was also known for its great
cattle drives, which lasted for only a short time
    - about 25 years.

THE wEST REGION
  • This region is huge, with enormous variety in
its landscape. Fruits and vegetables grow in the
fertile valleys. Forests supply much of our
countrys lumber. Long ago people were attracted
to this region by its rich resources and varied
    climate.
  • The Hawaiians were among the first people to
live in the West. Hawaii became one of the
United States in 1959. Today many different
industries provide jobs for the Wests growing
    population.
  • The West is a region of widely varying
geography. It is divided into the Mountain
States and the Pacific States. The farms of
Californias Central Valley are so big and
fertile that they are sometimes called farm
factories. They produce crops all year round.
  • Gold mining became an important part of the
heritage of the West. Few women traveled to the
West during the gold rushes. The movement for
womens rights won early victories in the West.
The Nineteenth Amendment made suffrage for women
    a law in our country.
  •  Climate played a role in moving the center of
the film industry to the West, which made Los
Angeles the megalopolis of the West.
