Caterham High School
Hearing Impaired Provision
2
History of the H. I. Provision
  • Opened in September 93 with 4 statemented
hearing impaired students and 1 teacher of the
    deaf.
  • By 2000 there were 24 students.
  • In 2005 students who use BSL were admitted to the
    dept.
  • Currently there are 13 students and a large team
of teachers of the deaf and special support
    assistants.

3
Philosophy of the H. I. Provison
  • The HIP has a communication policy based on the
total communication model., All students work on
    developing listening and speaking skills,
students may also use signed communication.
    Students communication needs are reviewed
    regularly.
  • Students use their residual hearing with hearing
aids and radio aids systems to maximise their
    listening.
  • The students are placed in tutor groups.
  • The aim is for the HI students to reach their
    educational, social and emotional potential
    within a mainstream environment.
  • Students receive in class support from either
teachers of the deaf or special support
    assistants.
  • Depending upon the students individual needs
they receive between 70 100 of their lessons
    in the mainstream.

4
Daily Audiological Checks
  • Students arrive at 8 am to have their hearing
    aids and radio aids checked.
  • It is imperative that the audiological equipment
is functioning properly for the students to gain
maximum benefit from their residual hearing.
  • High maintenance also involves close liaison with
    local Audiology Clinic.
  • Staff attend appointments to keep up to date with
new digital hearing aids and their maintenance
    procedures.

5
Pre and Post Teaching
  • Extra time for teaching and support is made
    available for the HI
  • students
  • Before school 8- 8.30
  • Afternoon registrations 20 mins
  • After school 3.15 3.30
  • Pre teaching During these sessions staff in the
    Provision introduce new
  • topics to the students to prepare them for their
    lesson
  • Consolidation Alternatively, these sessions are
    used for reinforcement
  • of the days concepts and vocabulary.

6
Pre and post teaching
  • This is a crucial part of the success of the HI
    students at Caterham.
  • The time created for this is outside lesson time,
    thus allowing for more inclusion.
  • It boosts the students confidence they are
prepared for the lesson and can participate
    alongside their peers.
  • Most importantly it ensures that the inclusion is
    meaningful experience.

7
Support in the classroom
  • Students are supported by specialist staff in all
    curriculum areas.
  • Support staff use a variety of strategies to
    ensure accessibility of the curriculum.
  • Liaison with mainstream staff is crucial for
    meaningful inclusion.

8
Support Strategies
  • Use of support books, to provide written
reinforcement of new vocab and concepts.
  • Use of OHP to ensure that reading of the text
and lip reading the teacher can be done
    simultaneously.
  • Use of video transcripts or subtitled videos to
    provide access to otherwise inaccessible
    educational videos.
  • Modify/differentiate tasks to ensure that text
    are linguistically accessible.
  • Pass the radio aids microphone around to hear
    students contributions.

9
Supported Studies - an option
  • Key Stage 3
  • In Years 8 and 9, HI students requiring more
small group teaching can opt to do one less
    Modern Foreign Lang.
  • This creates time on their timetable for
    Supported Studies.
  • Delivered by specialist staff.
  • Focus is on supporting core curriculum subjects.
  • Key Stage 4
  • Supported Studies can be taken as an option at
    GCSE level.
  • 5 lessons over a two week cycle
  • This creates time for more support for core
    curriculum subjects.
  • Close liaison with subject teachers is important
to maximise on learning time in these lessons.

10
Signing at Caterham
  • At the beginning of 2005 Caterham welcomed into
the hearing Impaired Provision four students who
use sign language to aid communication and
    support their learning.
  • staff in the hearing Impaired provision have been
preparing to use signing in the classroom. All
teachers of the deaf and most support assistants
have achieved their level 1 or level 2 BSL
certificate and one is now working towards level
    3.
  • There are two communication support workers to
    support students

11
Signing at Caterham
  • Many students have already shown an interest in
learning to sign. Non-signing students, both
hearing and hearing impaired, will be able to
learn more about sign language and develop some
useful signing skills at the lunch-time sign
    clubs offered by the HIP

12
Speech and Language Therapy
  • Speech Therapists visit the school regularly
  • They work on speech articulation with the
    students
  • The students value these one to one sessions to
develop discuss their speech concerns in a safe
    place.
  • Therapists liase with specialist staff so that
students speech targets are known by all
    department.

13
Assessment/IEP
  • HI students follow the schools assessment
    procedure.
  • To aid inclusion, each student has an Individual
    Education Plan IEP.
  • This provides subject staff with background info
on the student and gives their current targets.
  • Also the students undergo Annual Review
procedures to maintain their status as
    Statemented students.
  • There is involvement of Educational
Psychologists, social workers and local NDCS
    representatives.
  • In addition the HI students have regular hearing,
speech and language assessments. The results are
monitored closely to ensure that progress is
    being made.

14
Exams and Transition
  • Applications for modified papers are made.
  • The students are entitled to extra time and the
exams take place in acoustically treated rooms.
  • Staff are allowed to explain the carrier language
of questions but not technical terms to the
    students.
  • The HI students meet with Career Advisors to
decide whether to stay on at Caterham or to go
    onto a local college.
  • Some choose to do vocational courses at college
and are supported by specialist teams there.
  • Many have stayed on to do A levels/GNVQs and have
    gone on to University.

15
Primary Liaison
  • A teacher of the the Deaf will attend reviews of
HI students in year 5( and subsequent reviews)
to make initial contact with Parents/ students
(when present at reviews) and give information

informal visits to the HIP if they are
    considering applying for a place
