• Fewer than one-third of 4th and 8th graders in
  the U.S. perform at their grade level proficiency
  in mathematics
• 68 percent of 8th graders in the U.S. receive
  instruction in math from a teacher who does not
  hold a degree or certification in the subject
• American youth spend more time in front of a
  television or computer than in the classroom in
  front of a teacher
• At the University level, only 15 percent of U.S.
  students earn degrees in science or engineering,
  compared to 38 percent in Korea, and 50 percent
  in China and
• At the time of the report, the U.S. was producing
  more sports exercise majors each year than
  electrical engineers.
