The DataExpress PictureNOW
  • Each college has its own DataExpress catalog
stored in the GEN group/Pnnn account.
  • Colleges cannot access each others DataExpress
    catalogs.

The DataExpress PictureNOW
  • A single DataExpress catalog contains hundreds or
    thousands of procedures.
  • As of December 1, 2003 there are 21,709
    DataExpress procedures system-wide.

5
The DataExpress PictureNOW
  • Many procedures in a single catalog are similar
in data structure with minor differences. For
example, a class roster with Room Number or a
    class roster with Student Address.
  • Similarly, DataExpress procedures at one college
are much the same as DataExpress procedures at
    other colleges.

The Actuate PictureFUTURE
  • Colleges will share a larger central repository
of reports from which to meet their ad hoc query
    needs.
  • Colleges can access each others queries and
    reports if posted publicly.
  • Duplication of effort is expected to be reduced
    dramatically across the system.

How Do We Get There?
  • Step 1 Eliminate from consideration DX
procedures not used from July to December unless
college identified as quarterly or annual report.
  • Step 2 Set aside Financial Aid related DX
procedures for later consideration (due to
    changes in FAS).
  • Step 3 Set aside DX procedures accessing
dictionary defined KSAM/MPE files as these files
    must first be redeveloped.
  • Step 4 Set aside procedures accessing user
created files (commonly referred to as
multi-pass). This will require a more complex and
    individual review.
  • Step 5 Compress remaining 12,000/- DataExpress
data structures into common views prioritized by
system-wide usage. Result is 3,077 data
    structure views.

College Input
  • How do we categorize groups of trainees?
  • Expert perhaps needing development licenses and
    training.
  • Power User needs to get to a large and varied
amount of data and provide output in creative
    ways.
  • Frequent User uses database reporting tools
daily, but generally ok with canned reports.
