Title: ENDOCRINE FUNCTIONING
1ENDOCRINE FUNCTIONING
- If in doubt, blame it on a hormonal response!
Composed by Becky De Neve, R.N.
2Hormonal Adjustments
- Negative Feedback Loops What are they?
- Communicating to the nervous system and the
check and balance of homeo- stasis functioning.
3Negative Feedback Examples
- The thyroid acts to increase the amount of
calcium to the bone. - The parathyroid gland responses the opposite.
- In the pancreas, what is the hormone that works
opposite of insulins work?
4Highly Specialized Messengers
- A communication network delivering protein or
steroid chemical messen- gers to a specific
endocrine gland. And, then delivering its
hormones to a target organ.
5Lets look at some of its functioning..
6Metabolic Processes
- Controlled by the Anterior Pituitary gland
under the regulation of the hypothalamus. - TSH (Thyroid-stimulating Hormone) Helps
control heat and energy production in our body.
7Fluid Balances
- Posterior Pituitarys influence of ADH
(Anti-diuretic Hormone) - Keeps us in a hydrated state!
8- The Adrenals influence homeostasis of fluid
balance by the use of Aldosterone that assists in
the regulation of electro- lytes and blood
pressure.
9Electrolyte Balances
- Parathyroid Glands - mobilizes calcium from the
bone to the bloodstream. - Formation of strong bones and teeth, aids in
blood clotting, transmission of nerve impulses,
especially CALCIUM and PHOSPHORUS.
10Growth and Reproductive Development
- Somatotropic (STH) and Growth Hormone (GH)
Examples are Acromegaly
(Giantism) and Dwarfism - Responsible for height, body physique. And,
any unusual physical characteristics, if abnormal
levels exist. Regulated by the anterior
pituitary gland.
11Oh, is that where I get my shapely curves from?
12Fighting Inflammation
- Adrenocorticotropic (ACTH)
- Cortisol is a natural anti-inflammatory. Our
body produces about 5 mg. daily. - When steroids, exogenous amounts, are taken for
long periods of time in greater than 15 mg.s per
day, they can cause immunosupression.
13Fight or Flight Reactions
- Epinephrine produced by the adrenals medulla and
stimulated by the Sympathetic Nervous System - Dilates coronary arteries blood flow to the
muscles. - Constricts peripheral renal vessels.
- Allows relaxation of the smooth muscles of the
bronchioles, bladder, and GI tract.
14Yipes, Im out of here! Thanks to epinephrine.
It also increases my canine glucose levels to run
away!
15Shock
- Norepinephrine allows most blood vessels to
CONSTRICT conserving the BP.
16Reproduction, lactation, and sexual maturation
- will be addressed in fourth quarter work.
- Lets now look at when there is to much
stimulating or inhibiting of specific hormonal
actions.
