Title: Types of joints

1
Types of joints
  • (joints are also called articulations)

2
Synovial Joints
  • Freely moveable joints
  • Cavity at the joint
  • Encapsulated by dense connective tissue
  • The dCT secretes synovial fluid
  • The epiphysis of the bones is covered with
    cartilage
  • Have tendons and ligaments around them

3
Types of synovial joints
  • Gliding joints, found intercarpal and
    intertarsal the articulating surfaces are
    typically flat
  • Hinge joints, found in the fingers and elbow the
spoon-like surface fits into a concave surface
    (F/E)
  • Pivot joints, found at the atlas and axis as
wellas between the proximal ends of the radius
and ulna surface fits into a ring formed by bone
    and ligament (Rot)

4
Types of synovial joints, continued
  • Ellipsoidal, between radius and carpals oval
into an elipse (F/E, Ab/Ad, Circ)
  • Saddle, where the thumb attached to the wrist
    like a saddle and a rider (F/E, Ab/Ad, Circ)
  • Ball and socket, shoulder joint where a ball
fits into a cuplike depression (F/E, Ab/Ad, rot,
    circ)

5
Cartilaginous joints
  • Cartilage fill the space between the joints,
    allowing only a little motion
  • Between vertebrae
  • Between sternum and ribs

6
Fibrous joints
  • Fibrous connective tissue joins the bones
    (fontanelles)
  • No real space between bones
  • Allows bones of skull to cross during childbirth
