4What is Alpha Zeta?
5OUR PURPOSE
- Purposes of the Fraternity of Alpha Zeta are
-
- to bind together a group of men and women
interested in the continued advancement of
agriculture natural resource related
professions -
- to foster and develop high standards of
scholarship, character, leadership and a spirit
of fellowship among all its members.
6OUR MISSION
Alpha Zeta unites a diverse community of
lifelong leaders to actively promote and serve
global environmental systems including food and
fiber production.
7What are the main reasons for joining Alpha Zeta?
- Scholarship
- Character
- Leadership
- Fellowship
8Scholarship
Alpha Zeta believes that mastery of subject
matter is essential for strong leadership in our
modern scientific world. Unless students can
learn to apply themselves effectively through
mental discipline to maintain an above-average
scholarship record, they are not likely to become
an outstanding leader in their chosen field.
9Scholarship
Scholarship signifies ones ability to do
intellectual work. This is presently measured
in terms of grades and is not always indicative
of a persons worth. Therefore, scholarship is
only one qualification for membership.
10Character
Good character includes those elements of
personal makeup that, among other things, make a
person honest, fair, faithful, loyal and
dependable. In other words, a persons
principles, standards and conduct with respect to
right and wrong are the essentials of good
character. These attributes make up outstanding
Alpha Zeta members.
11Character
Alpha Zeta feels that good character is essential
to effective leadership and service.

readings of local Romanians. In 2001, Stephen
took part in a multifaceted mission team which
has been traveling to Criscior, Romania, for more
than 10 years.
12Leadership
Maryland Chapter Ag Day was designed to teach
elementary and middle school children from the
city about agriculture and natural resources
through hands-on activities. In 2001, the
children planted seeds, made ice cream and leaf
presses and learned about farm animals and
equipment from the Maryland Chapters new
initiates and student members.
Alpha Zeta consistently encourages individuals to
aspire to high ideals of leadership a quality
that can be cultivated and developed.
13Leadership
Leadership signifies a persons ability and
willingness to take hold of something and go
forward with it taking the group or
organization along. A person who performs
leadership activities successfully has also
demonstrated personality, fellowship and a
willingness to serve Agriculture, Life Sciences
and Natural Resources.
14Fellowship

In Alpha Zeta, members refer to each other as
Brothers and Sisters to emphasize the feeling
of fellowship that comes with being members of a
common family of interests.
15Fellowship
By encouraging the development of friendliness
and fellowship, Alpha Zeta strives to prepare its
members for leadership in their chosen field.

Texas Alpha Regional Meeting
Regional Meetings are strongly encouraged in each
of Alpha Zetas five regions. Special guest
speakers, idea exchanges, workshops, tours and
social events are included in the agenda for
regional meetings.
20Regional Meetings
- These meetings also give chapters and members an
opportunity to raise and discuss issues and/or
proposals they may wish to be addressed at the
next Biennial Conclave.
21Regional Meetings
Regional meetings take place over a weekend,
usually in the fall term. A regional coordinator
from the host chapter works with the National
Office in organizing the weekends
activities. The Fraternity is divided into five
regions Northeastern, Southeastern, North
Central, South Central and Western.
