Title: How NOT To Get Sick

1
How NOT To Get Sick
  • Simple things to do, Things not to do, and Where
to go when you are sick

wellness.ucsd.edu
2
Simple Tips
  • Wash hands often and well.
  • Anti-bacterial soaps are not effective in
preventing illness they actually make bacteria
stronger and more resistant to medication.
  • Alcohol-based gels are good for when you are on
    the go.
  • Dont touch your face bacteria cause illness
when they enter the membranes of you eyes, nose,
    and mouth.

3
Importance of Sleep and Water
  • Try to maintain a regular sleep routine getting
7-8 hours of sleep a night.
  • Drink more water!
  • 2, 32 oz. Nalgene bottles a day
  • 8, 8 oz. cups of water
  • 4, 16 oz. water bottles
  • Lack of sleep and dehydration both tend to
suppress your body's natural abilities to fight
    off illness.

4
Exercise
  • Aerobic exercise speeds up the heart to pump
larger quantities of blood makes you breathe
faster to help transfer oxygen from your lungs to
your blood and makes you sweat once your body
heats up. These exercises help increase the
    body's natural virus-killing cells.

5
Good Things to Eat
  • Red Bell Peppers
  • They actually have more vitamin C than citrus
    fruits!
  • Yogurt
  • Some studies have shown that eating a daily cup
of low-fat yogurt can reduce your susceptibility
to colds by 25 percent. Researchers think the
beneficial bacteria in yogurt may stimulate
production of immune system substances that fight
    disease.

6
Relax!
  • There's evidence that when you put your
relaxation skills into action, your interleukins
-- leaders in the immune system response against
cold and flu viruses -- increase in the
    bloodstream.

7
Things to Avoid
  • Smoking
  • Statistics show that heavy smokers get more
severe colds and more frequent ones.
  • Smoke dries out your nasal passages and paralyzes
cilia. These are the delicate hairs that line the
mucous membranes in your nose and lungs, and with
their wavy movements, sweep cold and flu viruses
    out of the nasal passages.
  • Alcohol
  • Alcohol also dehydrates the body -- it actually
takes more fluids from your system than it puts
    in.
