What is the Development Gateway ?
  • An Internet portal to information, knowledge and
    dialogue for poverty reduction and sustainable
    development
  • A virtual space for interaction, networking, and
    transactions within the development community.
  • Partnership Approach of the public and private
    sectors, donor agencies, indigenous
    organizations, governments, civil society and the
    private sector

  • Contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable
    development through knowledge and ICT
  • Build on existing knowledge networks
  • Strengthen capacity for knowledge sharing
  • Support the development of local content
  • Leverage indigenous knowledge

Indigenous Peoples Program

Main Activities
  • Indigenous Peoples Portal- facilitate information
    exchanges among indigenous organizations, donor
    agencies, governments and civil society
  • Training Program- strengthen capacity of
    indigenous organizations in using ICTs (2
    regional and 2 national training workshops in
    2001/02)
  • Country Gateway Program-support 12 locally-owned
    and managed ICT projects in Latin America, which
    are helping address the digital divide at the
    local level
  • Indigenous Dialogues-facilitate in partnership
    with Rigoberta Menchu Foundation, URACCAN, Fondo
    Indigena a series of dialogues among indigenous
    leaders on issues key to indigenous peoples

  • Objectives
  • provide practical information, capacity-building
    tools, and access to knowledge
  • Strengthen capacity of indigenous organizations
    to make use of the Internet
  • Leveraging indigenous peoples voices to influence
    global policy debates
  • Promoting information exchanges among indigenous
    peoples

  • Supported 2 regional training workshop (Central
    America/ South America) organized with URACCAN in
    Nicaragua and Fondo Indigena in Ecuador.

    (organized by the Fondo Indigena in Ecuador and
    Bolivia )
  • Training Program for the Andean Region-Escuela de
    Gobierno (joined program with key indigenous
    organizations, government agencies, Fondo
    Indigena and World Bank in Venezuela, Colombia,
    Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia) more info Fondo

  • Produced learning material on how to make use of
    the Internet (CD-rom, training manuel)

    poverty

    society, government, and the private sector
