Title: Electrical Drills

1
Electrical Drills
2
Introduction
  • Todays focus is on electric drills
  • Electric drills are a commonly used tool in the
construction industry but they can be potentially
    dangerous
  • Following simple safety procedures can reduce
    that danger factor

3
Statistics
  • Its estimated that about 350 construction workers
die each year do to electrical accidents
  • The number is unknown but many people are injured
by being startled from the shock and falling from
    the scaffold or ladder

4
What is OSHAs view on electric drills
  • 1926.302 (a)(1)- Electric power operated tools
shall either be of the approved double-insulated
type or grounded in accordance with subpart K
  • 1926.302 (a)(2)- The use of electric cords for
hoisting or lowering tools shall not be permitted

5
Electrical Drills can be Fatal
  • Human Perspiration can deadly
  • Ex. An employee was drilling a hole in the wall
hit 120- volt non-metallic sheathed cable, the
employee who was kneeling on the ground was
perspiring, and as a result was electrocuted due
    to ground fault

6
Electrical Drills can be Fatal
  • Defective power supply cords are deadly!
  • Ex. A worker who was wet from the rain and
working on a power pole was electrocuted because
the power supply cord was defective, and the
conductors inside the cord where exposed.

7
Battery Powered can be Fatal
  • Battery Powered Drills can cause Electrocution
  • Ex. A worker using a battery powered drill was
drilling sheet metal into the floor when his
screw hit a 120-volt non- metallic sheathed
cable. This energized the sheet metal and the
worker who was standing on the sheet metal was
    eletrocuted.

8
When operating and electric drill several safe
precautions should be considered!
9
Examine the drill and power cord
  • Make sure the casing of the drill is securely
    intact
  • Inspect the power supply cord for any bare wires
    that can be dangerous

10
Be aware of where you place the power supply cord!
  • Dont let the cord sit in water, snow, oil, or in
hot areas that can potentially melt the
    insulation
  • Dont run the cord in high traffic area where
other workers can trip and fall

11
Have good footing
  • When drilling make sure the area around you is
    not wet or slippery
  • Stay balanced when drilling on scaffold or a
    ladder

12
Be mindful of your clothing
  • Make sure any loose clothing is away from the
    drill and jewelry
  • Incase of drill slipping keep feet away from the
    drill
  • If hair is long have it secured or tuck it under
    a hat
  • Ex. Dr. Hinze had a worker with long hair using a
electric drill, his hair got caught in the drill
and it ripped a piece of his scalp out

13
Use sharp drill bits
  • Sharp drill bits cause the work to exert less
force, which reduces the chance of slipping
  • Sharp drill have a less chance of snapping or
    breaking off

14
Safety Glasses
  • Always wear eye protection when using a drill
  • Safety glasses reduce the chance of debris
    getting into your eye

15
Conclusion
  • Every day injuries on the job site occur, but we
must try to limit them if not erase them by
following OSHA guidelines and using common sense.
Also by looking out for one another we can
greatly reduce the amount of injuries that occur.
