Title: 1419 Diplomas
114-19Diplomas
- Kim Walton and Richard Brooke
2What is 14-19?
- Extract taken from SSAT Vocational Specialism
- We must encourage increasing numbers of young
people to enhance their life chances by
participating in education BEYOND the age of 16.
The target should be for all to achieve at least
a level 2 by the age of 19. Evidence shows that
those who fail to achieve this level have worse
prospects for employment, earning power and even
health. The government is clear about the
commitment - to break forever the historic link between
social background and life chances that have
dogged us as a nation - 14-19 White paper
3What are diplomas?
- The diploma is one of a number of reforms to
widen the range of options available to students. - Diplomas are a new suite of qualifications
covering a broad range of industry sectors. - Diplomas DO NOT replace existing qualifications
like GCSEs, A Levels, NVQs, BTECs or
apprenticeships. - Diplomas are very new and the first will be
offered from September 2008 as pilots - By 2013, ALL students will have access to ALL 17
diplomas
4How many diplomas are there?
- There were originally 14 diplomas in total.
- The list has recently been extended to 17.
- We DO NOT have to DELIVER ALL of these diplomas
but OGC students should be able to gain access to
them ALL by 2013.

DVD
8Levels of Accreditation
- The Foundation Diploma is a level 1
qualification. It takes broadly the same amount
of time to do as four or five GCSEs - The Higher Diploma is a level 2 qualification and
is an equivalent to 7 GCSEs - The Advanced Diploma, aimed at those over 16 is a
level 3 qualification. The advanced diploma is an
equivalent of 3 ½ A Levels - A progression Diploma (also level3) will be
available, broadly equivalent to two A levels.
This will suit students who may not wish to
complete a whole diploma
9Hospitality Diploma
An OGC student on this course may do 1 day at
Wakefield College with selected students from
Kettlethorpe High School, 1 day work experience
at Cedar Court Hotel and 3 days at Outwood for
core lessons
- Participants
- Outwood Grange College
- Kettlethorpe High School
- Wakefield College
- Wakefield Authority
- Cedar Court Hotel
- Compact Education Business Services
- Oulton Hall
Staff Staff from either Wakefield or Outwood
would teach the required subject content at the
appropriate site, depending on numbers of
students and relevant equipment needed.
It is relatively early days in the planning of
this diploma. The government have not even
released what subject content they want to be
taught
10What are the benefits?
- Diplomas combine academic learning with hands on
experience - Although students will be based I college they
will have the chance to do part of their learning
in other schools, colleges or in the workplace. - Learning about an industry sector will help
students make decisions about their future
careers - Students will acquire transferable skills that
any employer, in any sector will recognise - Diploma students will then have the knowledge,
understanding and skills they need to go onto
college or university - Students can take a diploma alongside their
GCSEs/A levels for example and will help them to
develop their English, Maths and ICT skills as
they can apply these skills in an industry led
environment
