- Employment status and responsibilities
- 49 of respondents are vendors, 42 work at a
biopharm company, and 9 are freelance
consultants - Over half the sample (55) has direct reports
- Years in industry
- An experienced respondent group mean of 13 years
in biopharm with a median of 11 - 81 reported at least five years, 59 at least
ten years, 23 at least 20 years

- Those planning to attend the Fall Workshop
averaged nine years experience, with a median of
eight, less than the total sample - Consultants, vendors and manufacturer employees
all reported a broad experience range

center on primary market research (85) and
secondary research (59), with strategy
development (47), pricing (46) and forecasting
(45) all apply to nearly half the sample - Competitive intelligence (37) and knowledge
management (35) also important

attendance at the May AGM, with only about half
as many (23) anticipating participation in the
Fall Workshop - Full and Affiliate members reported about equal
attendance at the AGM however, full members were
more likely to anticipate Workshop attendance

Activities
- In the last year, most participants had attended
external (64) and/or internal (56) training
nearly half (44) had obtained free information
via the Internet for professional development
purposes - Very few had attended a university course in
person or via distance learning (5 each), or
taken a fee-based online training course other
than a universitys (4)

- Almost all respondents (86) had identified at
least one professional development activity on
their own however, nearly one-third (30) had
participated based on a company requirement
and/or at someone elses strong suggestion (28)
- Biopharm company employees were much more likely
to have also attended training based on a company
requirement, or at anothers suggestion

- When asked to estimate organizational costs for
their individual participation in external
professional development activities over the last
year, one-fifth (19) of respondents were unable
to answer, and another ninth (11) perceived that
no organizational expense had accrued.

- Among those members specifying an annual expense,
89 reported at least a 1K expenditure, with
half (51) reporting a minimum of 5K and
one-fourth (26) reporting at least 10K in
expenses - A negative correlation between years of
experience and professional development expense
was seen

- More than three-fourths of members (82) reported
setting individual performance goals each year
of these, 80 characterized professional
development as part of these goals - A similar percentage (85) reported receiving
performance evaluations, with not quite
two-thirds (61) acknowledging enhancement of
professional skills as a factor in these
evaluations - Thus, professional development is reportedly more
likely to figure into annual goals than annual
reviews

- The half (55) of members with direct reports
were asked whether or not enhancement of their
subordinates professional development factors
into their own evaluations - The vast majority (93) of those supervising
colleagues reported that they personally are
evaluated, with 70 of those responding that
subordinates professional development does
affect managers own evaluations

- In an open-ended question, PBIRG members were
asked to identify the subject on which they are
most interested in learning more - Eight of 78 respondents were unable to specify an
area of interest - Many keyed on quantitative research in general,
or specific topics, such as conjoint/ financial
/secondary data analysis statistical methods,
such as logistic regression forecasting health
economics - However, qualitative methods were also of
interest, from interviewing to report writing

- Topics of interest included general managerial
skills as well as project management, leadership,
negotiation, consultative selling, organizing
results for presentations, disseminating
strategic information, strategic thinking,
professional writing, and managing the
information overload - Technology topics mentioned centered on computer
skills, online marketing research, and Internet
searching - Another area cited was the impact of cultural
differences on the research process, e.g. the
roles of various specialties by country
