The Need for LOCAL Awareness Building

• In the remote villages in developing countries,
  there is no awareness of the hazards of air
  pollution.
• In order to confront the health hazards of
  developing countries, we must first commit
  ourselves to awareness building.
• Unless people know about IAP and cost savings in
  efficient stoves, they will spend their money on
  well-marketed items rather than purchase a well
  designed cooking stove.

• Through a contract with the EPA/PCIA HELPS
  executed a project to design and document a
  process for Place Based education in remote
  villages.
• The outcome of this project was a guide book
  available to everyone.
• Every step of the process has been documented.

Process of LOCAL Awareness Building Through
Place-based Workshops

• Local disseminators are trained through a
  culturally relevant process so that they discover
  for themselves that indoor smoke is harmful.
• Local disseminators internalize the information
  and transfer their new knowledge into culturally
  specific training methods and materialssomething
  an outsider to the community could never do.
