Title: Comparison of Surface Temperature Measurements

1
Comparison of Surface Temperature Measurements
  • 28 Jan 2002 04 Feb 2002

2
JCOMM Graphic for SST
IGOSS nmc Reyn_SmithOIv1 weekly SST Weekly mean
sea surface temperature (blended from ship, buoy,
and bias-corrected satellite data). USA
3
Data Sets
  • Bucket Temperature
  • Along-Track System
  • Hand Held IR Gun
  • CTD temperatures at SFC
  • AVHRR Imagery from NOAA 12 and NOAA 16.

4
Bucket Temperature
  • The method was to lower a mercury thermometer
enclosed in a PCV pipe over the side. The
thermometer was then brought onboard and read.
  • Measured the mixed water. (Within the first
    meter)

5
Along-Track System
  • This is the sea water injection temperature as
    measured by the Pt Sur.
  • Measured the water just below the surface.
    (Within a few meters)

6
Hand Held IR Gun
  • The procedure was to take a reading of the
undisturbed water off of the bow of the Pt Sur.
  • Next take a reading of the sky directly above.
  • These two readings were used to calculate the
    surface temperature.
  • Measured the skin temperature. (First few mm
    of the surface)

7
CTD temperatures at SFC
  • The top temperature of each CTD cast during the
first leg were collected from the CTD logs.
  • Measured water in the first few meters.

8
AVHRR Imagery from NOAA 12 and NOAA 16.
  • Imagery from NOAA 12 and 16 was analyzed using
Xview to pull off temperatures that were closest
to the times and locations of the ship tracks.
  • Measured the skin temperature. (First few mm
    of the surface)

9
Expectations
  • Bucket, Along-Track, and CTD temperatures
    were expected to match well.
  • The hand held IR gun and the AVHRR data were
    expected to match well.

Correlations
13
Correlations
14
Possible reasons for non correlations.
  • Leg 1 was very cloudy.
  • Seas were rough for leg 1.
  • Bucket thermometer was large scale.
