4DC Motors
David Weaver Lenzs law doesnt really explain
the goings on. Explain the actual operation in
greater detail.
- In any electric motor, operation is based on
simple electromagnetism. A current carrying
conductor generates a magnetic field. - Lenzs Law ?B?V?I?B?
- Every DC motor has six basic parts- axle, rotor
(armature), stator, commutator, field magnets,
and brushes.
5Servo Motors
David Weaver Im sure you dont mean to
plagiarize, but you have
- A servo is a small device that has an output
shaft. This shaft can be positioned to specific
angular position by sending the servo a coded
signal. - The servo motor has some control circuits and a
potentiometer (a variable resistor, or pot) that
is connected to the output shaft. - This pot allows the control circuitry to monitor
the current angle of the servo motor. If the
shaft is at the correct angle the the motor shuts
off.
6Stepper Motors
David Weaver You should have some images that
help you explain the physics of how steppers work.
- Stepper motors can be controlled by turning coils
on and off, they are easy to control using
digital circuitry.
- Stepping motors can be viewed as electric motors
without communtators, which are in control of
flipping the rotors magnetic field. The
direction of rotation depends on which way the
current is flowing through the rotor. If the
motor is driven by a battery and flip the
polarity of the battery the direction will
reverse. - Typically all windings in the motor are part of
the stator, and rotor is either a permanent
magnet or a block of magnetic material. All of
the comutation must be handled externally by the
motor controller.
7Radio Controller Devices
David Weaver How is SAM radio controlled? You
need to go into MUCH greater detail about
electromagnetic radiation, how RC systems create
and use them, etc. Splain where these waves fit
into the spectrum, the function of the crystals
(at either end), etc.
- Both SAM the robot and the RC truck use Radio
Wave to control them. - Radio Waves are essentially electromagnetic waves
sent from a transmitter to the receiver in the
truck or SAM. - The receiver then translates the signal into
commands for each motor.
8Radio Controlled Devices
- Signals are measured in Megahertz which means
millions of cycles per second. The RC truck
operates at 27MHz.
9How does it work?
- The Transmitter is essentially the controller. It
takes a command, turns it into a pulse wave and
sends it to the transmitter. - The receiver is a tool used to receive the signal
transmitted and decode the pulses into the
original command. Then it tells the motors what
to do.
10How does it work?
David Weaver You really need to give credit for
where you got stuff. You should also describe
how the different commands differ. How is the
Forward command different from the Reverse?
- The signal wave is actually pulses. Different
amounts of pulses are different commands.
A- Pulse Sequince E-Burst Sequince B- 27.9 MHz
Signal -Each 700 Micro Sec Long C-Transmitted
Signal -With 700 Micro Sec Spacing D- 4 Syncro
Bursts F-Signal Repeats -Each 2.1ms long -With
700 Micro Sec Spacing
11The difference
David Weaver Sam is remote and the RC truck is
RC.
- The difference between radio control and remote
is that remote uses a wire to send the signals
through and radio is wireless.
