a hierarchy of motives based on basic human needs
that must be satisfied.
HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

to eat, breathe, live at this moment. Strong and
recurring, they grow stronger when denied.

that others are aware of you and want you to be
with them.

abilities and characteristics.

7SELF- ACTUALIZATION
8More efficient perception of reality and more
comfortable relations with it. Self-actualizing
people distinguish far more easily than most the
fresh, concrete, and idiosyncratic from the
generic, abstract, and rubricized. The
consequence is that they live more in the real
world than in the man-made set of concepts,
expectations, beliefs, and stereotypes which most
people confuse with the world. . . . they can
tolerate the ambiguous.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SELF-ACTUALIZED?

(problem-centered rather than ego-centered) The
Quality of Detachment the need for Privacy.
Autonomy, independence of culture and environment.
We must remember that the best technique we
know, even though not the only one, for getting
to this point of independence from love and
respect, is to have been given plenty of this
very same love and respect in the past.
11Continued freshness of appreciation.
The Oceanic Feeling (mystic experiences). Gemeinsc
haftsgefuhl (identification with, sympathy and
affection for others). Interpersonal relations -
deep and profound. The democratic character
structure. Means and ends are clearly
distinguishible. Philosophical, unhostile sense

13THE HUMANISTIC CHALLENGE . . .
Follow your inner voice. Appreciate and
understand your own needs. Develop depth
perception. Aim to self-actualize. Accept and
forgive others. Let go. Forgive yourself often.

problem begins to resemble a nail. Abraham Maslow
