The Goal To Become Information Literate
  • Recognize Need for Information
  • Locate the Information
  • Evaluate It
  • Organize It
  • Apply It
  • In a Way that Makes Sense to Others!

7
We Begin With.
The OSU Library Catalog
8
Catalog Basics
  • The Catalog
  • is for finding books, government publications,
and periodicals owned by our library. You will
NOT find individual articles in the catalog
  • Databases
  • are for finding articles from newspapers,
    journals, and magazines

9
Why Do We Even Need A Catalog?
  • Tells Us What We Own
  • Like a list you might make of your possessions
  • Called Holdings
  • Tells Us Where to Find Things
  • There are over 5 million items in OSUs
    collection
  • It is not possible to just walk to the right
    section of the library

10
Why Is The Catalog Set Up This Way?
  • Call Numbers
  • Unique identifiers for each item in the
    collection
  • Linked to the subject matter specified by
    author, title, year published.
  • Too many books have the same color, or size, but
every book has some unique features, and these
features allow us to apply the call numbers that
serve as a road map to the library

11
Searching The Catalog
  • Use a Keyword Search when you know the subject
  • E.g., Medieval Germany
  • Use a Basic Search when you know the title or
    author.
  • E.g, Gone With The Wind
  • In Author Searches, type the authors last name
    first
  • E.g., Simmons, Tom
  • In Title Searches leave off A, An, or The at the
    beginning of the title
  • E.g, Clockwork Orange
