7Developing Infrastructure Support
Ambulance service provider American Medical
Response (AMR) recently unveiled a
technologically advanced vehicle that includes,
among other features, an In Motion Technology
system that pairs a cellular Internet backhaul
connection with the Wi-Fi-driven ability to take
information beyond the vehicle..
..In Motion faces competition both from
mid-sized vendors like Verilink and from bigger
players such as Cisco, which offers a mobile
access router for vehicle deployment..

8Why Mobile Devices?
- There are currently 1.5B mobile devices/sensors
in the world today. This number is expected to
reach 3.0B by 2010 - Sensors, mobile and fixed, will become ubiquitous
- Today cell service providers get constant signal
strength readings from every cell phone in the
world - In the future every cell phone will be an RF
reader - RF tags will cost 0.10 each or less
9How would VA be used on mobile devices?
- Possible Roles
- First responders making coordinated life and
death decisions. - Information Analysts in the field doing analysis
- Research Outcomes
- Move visual analytic functionality outward
- Matching geospatial location to information
- Rapid distributed collaborative work
- Use of VA in a mobile environment
- What role would visualization play?
- Are any of the current VA tools useful?
- What devices should be developed for?
