Can I get a copy of this Webinar or the slides?
  • Yes! A recording of the Webinar and copy of the
slides will be ready in about two days
  • Locating them on our website
  • All registered webinar attendees will receive an
email with the link to the page for downloading
  • Our webinar materials are found in the ICPSR
Webinar Library under the Courses Learning
Tools tab located on the ICPSR front page

3
Variable-level Searching
  • Social Science Variables Database (SSVD)
  • Enables users to search for variables across
    datasets
  • Assist in data discovery, comparison, downloading
    and analysis
  • Useful in question mining for designing new
    research

5
Bibliography of data-related literature
  • A searchable database that contains over 48,000
citations of known published and unpublished
works resulting from analyses of data held in the
    ICPSR archive.

Using Maps
  • MDRC uses maps to search for data by geography
  • http//www.icpsr.umich.edu/MDRC/geography.html
  • Tiger/Line files uses maps to help find county
    level data
  • http//www.icpsr.umich.edu/TIGER/index.html

8
Using Maps
  • SAMHDA is building Flashmaps to analyze the
Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) and other
    datasets (not yet available)
  • Color shading will indicate strength of chosen
    variable
  • Rollover boxes will provide exact statistics
  • Also will be able to compare two years to see
    strength and direction of change

Quick Tables
  • Quick Tables allow you to produce analytic tables
by choosing from among pre-selected high-interest
    variables in drop-down menus.
  • Charts can be copied into documents or PowerPoint
    slides.
  • Output tables include cell percentages and
    confidence intervals (when selected) and
    weighted and unweighted Ns.

Additional Analytic Tools
  • Resource Center for Minority Data (RCMD) formerly
known as Minority Data Resource Center (MDRC)
created additional tools for data assessment.
  • Sample Characteristics
  • Subsetting
  • Recode Syntax Generation

18
Subsetting Tool
  • This tool allows analysts to interactively pull a
demographic extract of the entire study. This is
    particularly useful for those conducting
    subpopulation analyses.
  • Link to Subsetting Tool for LNS

19
Sample Characteristics Tool
  • This tool is designed to help analysts decide if
the sample is adequate or appropriate for the
analysis at hand. This is of particular interest
    for comparative analysis.
  • Link to Sample Characteristics Tool for LNS

20
Recode Syntax Generation Tool
  • This tool is largely instructional. It allows
for menu driven recoding that generates syntax
instructions for the demographic variables in the
study. This will help students learn how to
conduct their own analyses without the aid of
    SDA.

21
Quick Aside
  • The RCMD site will launch in late October.
  • New look
  • Faceted searching like new ICPSR site
  • Better site organization
  • New SDA Tools?

  • What additional online analysis tools would you
    like to see?
  • What would help you better use ICPSR data?
