Device
2Elisha Graves Otis was the inventor of the safety
elevator device. This mechanism changed elevator
history when it was first tested at the Crystal
Palace Exposition in New York, USA in the 1850s.
3Leading up to the test run, Otis worked as a
Machinery installer and had always wanted to
create a device that prevented the elevator from
falling if the rope supporting it broke. Of
course he finally, after a long time of hard
work, he was struck with the perfect idea, the
one, and only Safety Elevator Device!
4This mechanical mechanism is constructed out of a
strong steel, wagon spring meshing with a normal
ratchet. If the rope were damaged in any way that
would cause it to break and let go of the
elevator, the spring would make a quick catch,
saving the lives of the passengers riding in the
elevator.
5He proved his invention worthy of the typical
American use by standing in the elevator shaft
and asking someone to cut the ropes with an axe
in front of a large crowd. Of course his Safety
Elevator Brakes were a success and he became as
successful as his invention still is today. His
name has been honored on elevators throughout the
nation and is still an idol to all elevator
makers to this day.
6 His invention has benefited all people around
the world because of this new and safe way to
reach the highest of places without using a
single ounce of strength well maybe your little
finger!
