9Importance of e-serials http//www.serialssolution
s.com/marcchallenge.asp
10Scenario - Before Serials Solutions implementation
- Unsatisfied with existing methods of keeping up
with e-resources - Duplicating efforts in keeping track of existing
resources - Not sure of all the titles we subscribe to
- Not satisfied with usage statistics. Were we
getting bang for our bucks? - Need to improve labor intensive procedure
- Need to check multiple resource in quest for
requested by patrons titles
11What were we trying to accomplish?
- Reduce search times and increase use of available
resources - Operate our library more efficiently
- Save by spending them wisely
- Generate additional income ?

15SS Client Center great tool 10/17/05
16What we had to identify
- Electronic Resources
- Types of resources
- Evaluate how we handle e-resources subscribed to
and why - Types of patrons allowed to access them
- Create Toll booths traffic control
17Collection Overlap Analysis
18Collection Overlap Analysis
WOW! these numbers are very impressive
19JAC - not just a catalog anymore
20Our Usage Statistics by Search Type

33Not really
34Serials Solutions action plan
35We were finally ready after
36When one database is down, you still have plenty
of choices
37Our approach to licensing issues
?
38Set a MARC (load)
39MARC Records Benefits to Patrons
- No need to change behaviors familiar OPAC
environment - Single point of access no need to check many
sources - Enhanced search ability (LCSH subjects, cross
references, etc.) - Full information
- Easy of use
40MARC Records Benefits to Librarians
- Centralized collection
- Customization
- No duplication
- Quality data
- Multiple tools for multiple patrons
41Getting ready for load
- Check your Innovative system to make sure you
have enough records available if not contact III
Jenkins has unlimited number of records - Check your load tables
- Ask SS to for sample records, do you need to
modify them? - Dont just look at them, load them into your
system. - Look for unexpected things

43Getting ready for load cntd.
- Show them to your Implementation Team members
- Make sure that the Team is finished picking all
databases you want to include in this project. If
they did communicate this to Serial Solutions so - they can start working on your set of records
- Stay on the top of things
- Test
- Involve other staff members in testing
- Verify, verify, verify
44Load Records
45Check records for well being or C gt COUNT tags
46Checking load
47Test display in OPAC - After the load
48Review file after load
49Integrating MARC Records from Serials Solutions
into Jenkins Catalog
50Checklist for record editing
- Verify location
- Remove call numbers
- Adjust subdivisions to conform to local practice
- Examine uniform titles adjust for local practice
51Checklist for record editing
- Examine/remove 653s, 655s, 690s
- Examine subject headings by tag (650b1, 65012,
650b2, 65022, 650b3, 650b4, 650b5, 650b6, 650b7,
650b8 and so on)
52Create a list by tag
53Regular expressions as a search tool
- Playing with Matches Using Regular Expressions
to Light Up Create Lists - Richard V. Jackson, Coordinator / Presenter
Catalog Librarian / Database Manager Huntington
Library rjackson_at_huntington.org - http//innopacusers.org/iug2004/programs/K1
54Lots of 653s
55Create a list by tag 655 and sort by 655 tag to
examine headings
56Strange 655s
57Create a list by tag
58650b6s
59650b6s get others out too
60650 12, 22, b6
61650b7s?? What are they?
62650b7 mixed sources?
63Time to rethink?
- With so much data to examine and evaluate would
it be more effective to look for what wasnt
there? - Developed a list of valid subject tags after much
trial and error
64No subject search
65The records needing subject headings are at hand
66The editing continues .
67What we learned at Jenkins
- Focus on what isnt there subject headings that
your catalog will index - Dont worry about the extraneous data
68Hand in HandJournal Portal in MARC records
69Searching JAC for Harvard Law Review multi
record approach
SS MARC
70MARC from Serials Solution in our JAC
71Our Portal was unveiled to our patrons on 9/1/05
one week after MARC records were loaded to JAC

72JAC enhanced
73 and we were ready to advertise

79MARC records monthly update
80Update to MARC records our First September
update
- Processing \\sersol\dfs\Tech-Dev\MARCReports\Jenki
nsLaw\2005-09\report.mrc - 301 records being processed
- 131 'Add' records
- 93 'Change' records
- 77 'Delete' records
81Record for deletion - sample
82What we accomplished so far
- Increased the usage of the databases to which we
subscribe. - Too soon to see other results
83Anticipated benefits of this implementation -
have we met them?
- Reduce search times and increase access to
available resources - Operate library more efficiently
- Save by spending them wisely
- Generate additional income
