Deicing Fluid

• Used to deice aircraft to make them safe for
  flying
• Main contaminating element of deicing fluid is
  ethylene glycol

• 10 drainage pads
• Spend several million dollars to reduce the
  chemicals in the water by as much as 80 percent
• Excess ethylene glycol is vacuumed up by special
  trucks or directed to tanks so it can be recycled
• Won praise from environmental officials on
  efforts to keep amount in local streams

Effects of Deicing fluid on Aquatic life and
humans

• High levels can cause sphaerotilus bacteria to
  form, this can smother aquatic life
• High levels may also cause death to aquatic life
• Being exposed to deicing fluid can cause problems
  with major organs in the human body, particularly
  the brain, heart, and lungs

• High levels can cause nausea, convulsions,
  slurred speech, disorientation, and heart and
  kidney problems
