This is the flow of product, not data. This
represents the Physical Supply Chain and it
happens to look like a retail scenario, although
lets not limit our thinking to that channel.
4OK, lets go with Retail
- Several Channels
- Dept. Stores
- Grocery
- Chain Drug
- DIY
- Specialty
- (and Global!)

23How about Automotive?
- Parts, Assemblies, etc.
- For auto manufacturing, not retail
24So Whats a Data Identifier?
- Technically, a Prefix or a Qualifier that adds
intelligence to data contained in a Data Carrier
(such as a Bar Code) - Practically, something that tells you what kind
of data is about to follow! Without them,
scanning applications cannot put data in the
proper slot. Whats the Part Number? Wheres
the Quantity?
25Why Data Identifiers?
- Which symbol has the Part Number? (How can you
tell?)
26AIs and DIs Similar Function Different Codes
- ISO/IEC 15418 - EAN/UCC Application Identifiers
and FACT Data Identifiers and Maintenance - Application Identifiers (AIs)
- UCC/EAN-128 Application Identifier Standard
(ANSI/UCC4) - www.uc-council.org/id_numbers/id_reference_library
.html - AIs are used in retail and other industry Supply
Chains - Data Identifiers (DIs) (originally developed by
F.A.C.T.) - ANSI MH10.8.2 Data Application Identifier
Standard - www.mhia.org/mh10/sc8/documents.htm
- Maintained by sub-committee of ANSI MH10.8
- Download from www.autoid.org
- AIAG standards use DIs Only
M
27History - 2D Syntax
- 1996
- ANSI MH10 committee develops a new syntax
structure for data in 2D symbols - published as ANSI MH10.8.3.
- 2000
- ISO adopts ANSI 2D syntax in the ISO standard
ISO/IEC 15434
28Data Syntax for 2D
- ISO 15434 Data Syntax for High Capacity ADC
Media - Rules for formating messages with multiple data
fields(assembling multiple data fields or formats
of data) Applies to 2D symbologies and RFID tags
Note This data syntax will also apply to RFID
(transponders) and Contact Memory Buttons.
Hello, New Data Carriers!
29Lets Define Syntax
- Webster Syntax (sin taks) n. The way words
are put together and related to one another in
sentences sentence structure - Graham Data Syntax (day tuh sin taks) n.
The way data elements are encoded, separated, and
strung together in a 2D symbol rules for data
envelope structure

33In Summary
- Data Identifiers (or AIs, or TEIs)
- Prefixes or qualifiers that add intelligence to
data contained in a Data Carrier (a bar code in
our examples). They tell an application what
kind of information follows. - 2D (or EDI) Syntax
- The methodology for assembling multiple data
and/or multiple formats of data in a single
symbol or Transaction Set. (Organizing our
message according to a set of rules)
34Or even Pharmaceuticals and Med/Surg Devices
- Drs Offices, Pharmacies, Hospitals
