Leadership in Relation to Sports
  • By Richard Collier 938833
  • Psychology 1023

2
Leadership
  • Burns defines leadership as the reciprocal
process of mobilizing, by persons with certain
motives and values, various economic, political,
and other resources, in a context of competition
and conflict, in order to realize goals
independently or mutually held by both leaders
    and followers.
  • Leaders help give their team focus and strength.
  • Leadership is related to social influence,
therefore one with social influence would make a
    good leader.

3
Different Types of Leaders
  • There are five main leadership types
    authoritative, political, evaluative,
    participative, and laissez-faire.
  • Authoritative and political are leader centered
    styles, and evaluative, participative, and
    laissez-faire are group centered.
  • Authoritative (telling) the leader identifies
the problem, finds a solution, and impliments the
solution. The leader may or may not choose to
consider what the rest of the group has to say.
  • Political (selling) same as authoritative,
except the leader tries to persuade the group
    members into accepting the solution.

4
Different Types of Leaders
  • Evaluative (testing) the leader finds a
tentative solution, then gets the reactions of
the group before making the final solution.
  • Participative (consulting) the leader lets the
group in on the process from the start. All
group members contribute to the finding of
solutions, then the leader picks out the one they
    regard as the best.
  • Laissez-faire (joining) the leader is just
another member of the group, and agrees to carry
out whatever solution the group comes up with.

5
Goals
  • The overall goal of this project is to find out
what an ideal leader for a sports team is.
  • To accomplish this finding out who is the more
effective team leader, player or coach, will be
    key.
  • What are the qualities that a successful team
    leader should have?

6
Participants
  • The participants will come from high school
    athletes on senior varsity teams.
  • Eight teams will be surveyed.
  • There will be around 100-140 participants,
depending on the size of the teams.
  • Four of the teams will be girls teams and four
    will be guys teams.
  • The sports teams included will be basketball,
    rugby, soccer, and softball.

7
Method
  • Teams will be spread out over the testing room,
so that they cannot see each others answers, or
feel like their teammates are reading their
    answers.
  • There will be a twenty minute time period for the
    participants to complete the survey.
  • The participants will not be permitted to talk
while the survey is being carried out.
  • To ensure the participants, dont talk or look
off each other sheets someone overseeing the
survey will be present in the room for the
    duration of the survey.

8
The Survey
  • The survey is broken up into three sections, with
    each survey having two sub-sections.
  • The three sections will be Experience with
coaching, experience with player leadership, and
    leadership qualities.
  • The two sub sections will be multiple choice, and
    written questions.
  • Each multiple choice section will consist of
twenty statements, which the participant will be
asked to rate whether they strongly agree (1) or
    strongly disagree (5).
  • The written portion will consist of three
    questions.

9
The Questions
  • Here are examples of questions found in the first
    part of each section
  • For the following put whether you strongly agree
    or disagree
  • - Sec. A After discipline from the coach, I
work hard to change what I did wrong.
  • - Sec. B My player leader will talk to me
    outside of team events.
  • - Sec. C My player leader is comfortable
telling me if I did something wrong in a game,

10
The Questions
  • The written questions will be relatively similar
in the first two sections, with the final
    sections being more different.
  • An example from the coaching section would be
Have you ever had a negative experience with a
    coach? Please explain.
  • An example from the player section would be
Have you ever had a positive experience with a
    player leader? Please explain.
  • An example from the qualities section would be
What do think are some qualities a leader should
    have?
  • These questions will help explain the way the
    participants answered the multiple choice
    questions.
