Recruitment
2
Chapter Boxes
  • Whats included this year?
  • CR cups, beer pong balls, bottle openers, vinyl
    banners and literature
  • How do I get a chapter box?
  • Your chapter box will ship on Aug. 17 if your
State Chair fills out a short Google document by
    July 24.
  • Annoy them if necessary your chapter box is on
    the line
  • What if my State Chair does not do this?
  • You will not get a chapter box until after Sept.
    1.
  • So far only the following states have filled out
    the form
  • D.C.
  • Georgia
  • Michigan
  • Texas
  • Delaware
  • Missouri

3
Before getting started
  • Be passionate. If you were asked to join a group
by someone that sounded bored with it, would you
    join?
  • Wheres your focus. Is it on you and your
members, or is it on students you have not yet
    joined?
  • First impressions. When you first meet someone,
    how important is that?
  • Loosen up. Does recruiting really have to be as
awkward as that conversation with they guy/girl
you kinda knew in high school, but really didnt
know all that well, and that you run into at
Walmart randomly when you are home from school?
  • One size fits all. Is every CR on this call the
same? Then why should recruitment treat every CR
    the same?
  • Be careful talking issues.

4
Applying Marketing PrinciplesThe Four Ms
  • Recruiting is about marketing your chapter. Here
are some things to think about.
  • Mission What is your mission? What is it that
you are ultimately trying to do?
  • Message What is your message? Which message will
    achieve your mission?
  • Media In what manner are you spreading your
message? Recruitment table? Easel at table?
Banner? Flyers? Twitter? Facebook? Phone calls?
  • Measurement How are you doing at reaching your
goal? What metrics to you have to gauge your
    success?
  • Always remember If I were in their shoes, and
saw what they saw, and heard what they heard,
    would I join?

5
Basic Recruitment
  • Time First 4 days of class from 9am-2 pm.
  • Place High traffic area on campus.
  • Staff Two standing people at all times.
  • Table The table must have several things
  • Sign up sheet
  • Flyer for first meeting/event
  • Stuff for potential members to take (pins,
    button, literature)

6
Basic Recruitment Table
  • Picture of a basic recruitment table.

7
Advanced Recruitment Create a chill
environment
  • Goal Create environment at your recruitment
table where its cool for Republican/conservative
    students to hang out.
  • Primary purpose Creates a positive first
impression of your group when students walk up
and see a cool place where other students are
    hanging out
  • Secondary purpose Recruits more people, and
    builds relationships with recruits and
pre-existing members who choose to hang out at
    the table

8
Be environmentally friendlyChill the
environment (not an endorsement of cap and trade)
  • Timing First two weeks of school from 9am-3pm
  • Location High traffic area outside (stay in 1
    spot)
  • Housing Buy canopy tent (looks cool, recruit no
    matter rain or shine)
  • Tunes For God sakes, play some music
  • Equipment Use multiple laptops one playing
chapter-made recruit. vid., other to sign-up
    students
  • Personnel Have 4-5 College Republicans to
recruit, welcome new members, talk with
    interested students

9
Take a chill pill dude
  • Multi-directional advertising Hang banner from
both tables and in-between the bars on the back
    end of the canopy tent
  • Table decorations Cover tables in flyers, CR
produced lit, 1st meeting flyer, other GOP stuff
  • Messaging Set up easels with a fun, satirical,
or humorous message tailored to students
  • Messaging II Hand out flyers (or something
similar) with a message on it to students walking
    by
  • CR Confessions Set up video booth to video
students edit to make into YouTube video

10
Drinking the Kool-Aid
  • Goal Play beer pong with chapter box materials
and kool-aid, have fun, and mock Democrats for
drinking the kool-aid or to say CRs drink
lower taxes/less government/power to the people
    kool-aid.
  • Purpose Get students talking about College
    Republicans. Draw students that wouldnt
otherwise approach the table, and sign-up.
  • Equipment Set up a table and use CR beer pong
balls and CR cups. Be sure to have cooler for ice
to keep kool-aid cold. Student wont play w/ warm
    kool-aid.
  • Limitless Possibilities Brain-storm variations
to the game and ways you can make the game
cooler, as well as to how to educate those who
    play on the issues.

11
Branching outMoving beyond the table
  • Difficult for some CRs to do, but lets be honest
its difficult because some CRs are lazy.
  • Dont be lazy
  • Assumption You are not reaching all GOP students
    on campus w/ table
  • How to move beyond Go to them
  • Where are GOP students?
  • Frats/Sororities tend to be more conservative
  • Ag departments tend to be more conservative
  • Business/economic depts tend to be more
    conservative
  • What do I do to reach out?

12
What is your pitch?
  • All the other stuff is important, but.
  • In my opinion, most overlooked aspect of
    recruitment is the pitch.
  • The pitch is what you (i.e. the people working
the recruitment table) say when the inevitable
question is asked What do College Republicans
    do? (or something similar)
  • There really is no right way to craft a pitch,
but wrong way would to not craft one at all.
  • This is just something you need to think about
ahead of time and actually use when recruiting.

13
Totally creepin on FB
  • How to use Facebook for CRs
  • Find students who self-identify as
    conservatives/Republicans or are members of
    conservative/Republican groups
  • Collect e-mail, phone numbers and addresses of
    all students identified
  • From Facebook profiles
  • From university websites -- most universities
provide a student database on the Internet
  • UMKC Example
  • 475 students found 333 joined group
  • Statewide (13 schools)
  • 2,343 students found 1,896 joined group or
    pending
  • Mizzou, UCM and other big schools still to go

14
New Jersey and Virginia
  • CRs are teaming up with the RGA to get students
to NJ and VA to volunteer during final days of
    campaign
  • All expenses of the trip would be covered
  • Important because elections will be painted as
referendum on Obama if we win, go into 2010
    with lots of momentum
  • Sign students up during recruitment, discuss at
first meeting, set up FB events, etc.

15

16

  • Now that everyone is sufficiently tired of
hearing my voice, I want to hear yours.
