1
Affect and cognition the hard interface
R.B.Zajonc and Hazel Markus Presented
By Srinivas Konkanchi
2
Affect and cognition
In the Contemporary Psychology , cognitive and
affective processes are treated as distinct
concepts But both domains of research interact
with one another constantly and vigorously. The
Conceptual isolation of affect and cognition is
likely to persist unless we come to understand
which elements of these two process contact each
other and how they influence one over the other.
3
Experimental challenge Complex in Nature

Both process shares many subsystems of the
organism like Neural ,muscular, mental and are
derived from a variety of common external and
internal resources like biological states
sensory input ,and subjective experiences.
4
Forms to represent Affect

Feelings
,emotions and mood

Forms to represent Cognition
By organism's activities
Motor System is a critical point between affect
and cognition ,It provides a rich database
reveling affective And cognitive phenomena that
can be directly observed And manipulated.
5
Representation of affect
Cognitive theories of emotion

Cognition is a central factor
Somatic theories of emotion
The motor system and expressive
movements
6
Both theories try to identify the significant
parameters of Emotional Expression .
They
attempt to specify stimulus properties .
The Cognitive theories of emotion
assume representation of affect is imposed by
individual .
Somatic theories of emotion assume affect
was derived from Kinesthetic feedback that is
generated by emotional arousal . Therefore
representation of affect is rather abstract , can
be inferred By observing behavior and antecedent
conditions .

7
Emotions
There are typically two ways to represent
emotion . Hard
representation Soft
representation Generation of emotion associated
with three components Arousal of
autonomic and visceral activity
Expression of emotion
Experience of emotion

More Questions No research on Software
representation Motor responses are too
diffuse to serve representational Functions The
same motor response seems to represent different
Objects or events The motor system lacks
sufficient variability
