Queenstown

• The town was named Queenstown in honour of Queen
  Victoria as a local gold digger said that the
  town was fit for a queen.
• William Gilbert Rees was Queenstowns first
  European settler in 1860 and the communitys
  founding father.
• Queenstown is surrounded by mountains and
  colourful scenery. Queenstown is located on the
  shores of Lake Wakitipu, the third largest lake
  in NZ.

Queenstown

• Thomas Arthur and Harry Redfern discovered gold
  in the Shotover River. The town soon grew with
  many people coming to the area to search for gold
  and to strike it rich. The gold rush lasted
  until 1900, about 40 years.
• The closest cities are Dunedin and Invercargill.
  
• The population in June 2008 was 26,400 people.

Queenstown

• The activities that happen in Queenstown are
  skiing,snowboarding,surfing,mountain
  biking,paragliding and the big winter festival
  which takes place in June. It is all about
  snowboarding and skiing which is fun. Luge is a
  funny kind of thing to do because it has no
  wheels and its very hard to steer it. Rafting
  and jetboating are also popular tourist
  attractions in the area.

• Queenstown is the best place in the south island
  to do snow sports.
• The oldest attraction in Queenstown is the Coal
  Fired Steam ship. TSS Earnslaw, that is nearly
  100 years old.
• Wine is another important thing to Queenstown and
  the area is known for producing Pinot Noir.

• Queenstown is a tourist place. You can travel by
  car or by plane but not by train because there
  is no railway around the south part or near
  Queenstown.There are lots of buses that come from
  Queenstown to Christchurch or from Christchurch
  to Queenstown. Air New Zealand and Qantas fly
  from Queenstown.
