Badminton
  • Six Steps To Hitting An Overhead Clear, And Five
Steps To Hitting An Underhand Clear In Badminton
  • By Annmarie Ulissi

  • Badminton has steadily gained worldwide
acceptance as a very fast-paced competitive game
    for highly skilled players.
  • At the beginning level, it is usually possible to
keep the shuttle in play, which makes the game
enjoyable and rewarding for most age groups.
  • Shuttle

3
What are Clears in Badminton?
  • Clears are used as a defensive stroke allows
time for you to reposition yourself, and also
moves your opponent as far away from the net as
    possible.
  • There are two types of clears Overhead and
    Underhand.

4
What is an Overhead Clear?
  • An overhead clear is a motion used to strike the
shuttle when it is above the head. It is usually
    taken from a backcourt position.
  • Once the shuttle is hit, it travels over your
opponents head and lands close to the baseline.

5
The six steps Overhead Clear
  • Position yourself under and slightly behind the
    dropping shuttle.
  • Prepare the racket in the back-scratching
    position.
  • As you swing upward, rotate the forearm and
extend the arm as high as possible, with the
    racket face pointing slightly upward.
  • At the moment of contact, snap the wrist quickly.
  • Hit the shuttle high (18 to 20 feet) and deep
    into your opponents backcourt area.
  • Follow through across your body.

6
What is an Underhand Clear?
  • A stroke that is hit upward when the shuttle has
    fallen below shoulder level.
  • Usually taken from a forecourt position. When
your opponent hits a drop shot into your
forecourt, or close to the net, it forces you to
    lift the shuttle.

7
The Five Steps Underhand Clear
  • Lunge to the shuttle with your racket leg forward
    at contact.
  • Contact the shuttle at the highest point
    possible.
  • Lift the shuttle with a hard, explosive wrist
    action.
  • Lift the shuttle high (18 to 20 feet) and deep
    into your opponents backcourt area.
  • Follow through in the direction you intend the
    shuttle to travel.
