Title: Does this sound familiar
1Does this sound familiar?
2Youre out with some friends, and youre trying
to decide what to do when someone suggests the
art museum.
3You say something like, Yuck. Id rather go to
the dentist than go to an art museum.
4Your friends are surprised, so you tell them,
Well, I dont understand modern art.
5Whenever I go to an art museum or have a
conversation about a painting, theres always
someone who tells me what I should like.
6And if I dont like it, that makes me feel
theres something wrong with me.
7I actually do like some paintings, but I dont
like being told how to react.
8I dont know much about art, but I know what I
like.
9Your reaction is not unusual.
10A lot of people these days claim not to like art
because they dont understand it.
11Others object to being pressured to like a
painting or a sculpture because its famous.
12Now the new downtown art museum is set to open
next week.
13If someone insists on dragging you to it, dont
despair things are not as bad as they seem.
14You can make it through the experience, and you
might even get something out of it.
15Let me give you some tips on how to survive a
visit to an art museum.
16Heres the first tip Take it easy.
17Just go for a short time and only look at a few
pictures.
18If you try to see everything, youll end up
suffering from sensory overload.
19Theres only so much that your brain can absorb
at a time.
20Dont feel that you have to get your moneys
worth and stay until the museum closes.
21Second tip Walk around by yourself, not with a
friend, or a group of people.
22Take your time, not someone elses.
23You wont get much out of a piece of art unless
you experience it in your own way.
24That wont happen if youre on a schedule or if
someone is trying to move you along.
25Third, and most importantly Dont make a trip to
an art museum an intellectual experience.
26Make it a personal experience.
27When you walk into a room of art objects, your
eye will be attracted by certain paintings or
sculptures.
28Go and look at those first.
29Be honest about your reactions.
30Dont try to like something just because someone
else thinks you should.
31There are plenty of people who dont think much
of the Mona Lisa, even though its one of the
most famous paintings in the world.
32Keep this firmly in mind Although many works of
art are famous (and therefore supposedly good),
theres no accounting for taste.
33A piece of art should be like a favorite piece of
music, an exciting movie, or a fascinating book.
34It should speak to us personally.
35We need to make it our own.
