IPIECA/IMO Global Initiative

• Joint programme between IPIECA and the
  International Maritime Organisation (IMO) with
  the aim of enhancing oil spill preparedness and
  response capacity for marine spills at priority
  locations around the World
• IMO provides a link to national governments and
  IPIECA provides link to local oil industry in
  priority locations
• GI programme traditionally carried out through

• Training/exercises

• GI has moved to a regional model, with dedicated
  regional coordinators

Relationship between IPIECA and GI Regional Groups

• IPIECA provides management and coordination to
  OSPRI and WACAF groups, with emphasis on
  participation from each regions business units
• Both groups achieve good results due to
• Strong Steering Committees which coordinate the
  GI activities for each region
• Regular dialogue between IPIECA and the IMO
• Dedicated Project Coordinator driving progress
• Support from IPIECA Secretariat

• MOIG's activities were originally coordinated
  through the IPIECA Secretariat, but MOIG is now
  registered as a separate entity and a MOIG
  Secretariat has been established in Tunisia
• Relationship between IPIECA and MOIG

  committee
• Attendance at MOIG sessions and MOIG at OSWG
  meetings

Conclusions Benefits of IPIECA as an Umbrella
Organisation

• The Oil Spill Working Group sets IPIECAs
  strategic objectives within the GI partnership
  and oversees the achievement of these objectives
• MOIGs good relationship with IPIECA, sustained
  over time, provides access to a key international
  industry forum, leading to improved oil spill
  contingency planning and response in the
  Mediterranean region
