  • Shared governance ensures faculty, staff and
    students the right to participate effectively in
    district and college governance.
  • Shared governance allows the opportunity to
    express opinions at the campus level.
  • Shared governance ensures that these opinions are
    given every reasonable consideration.

  • To influence policies that will affect
    classified.
  • To represent classified concerns to the colleges
    leadership.
  • To learn from the experience.

Your purpose
  • To embrace a proactive role in collegial
    governance.
  • To effectively provide representation in all
    issues involving classified staff
  • To value, advocate, and participate in
    MiraCosta's collegial governance process with
    colleagues including student body, administration
    and faculty, as set forth by the college's Board
    of Trustees.

  • Treasurer 8 hrs. release time

How do you get involved?
  • Elected (i.e., Classified Senate Council, CRC)
  • Appointed by Classified Senate President
  • Appointments are typically made in late spring or
    early summer.
  • Assignments last at least one year.
  • Required by your work assignment/job title
  • Volunteer for ad hoc committees

Who do you represent?
  • All Classified Employees!
  • You may be the only classified person to voice a
    point of view, so be prepared to speak up.
  • Solicit input from other classified staff
    members.
  • Remember to report back to Classified Senate
    Council when appropriate.

What makes a good representative?
  • Meet with the Classified Senate President, or
    committee chair, or a knowledgeable classified
    employee for background information.
  • Attend all meetings
  • Dont miss the first meeting of the semester as
    this is
  • when future meetings are scheduled.
  • Make sure you are receiving updates and agendas.
  • Be prepared, do your homework.
  • Understand the mission.
  • Obtain buy-in from your constituents.
  • Understand the issues and the broader context in
  • which they exist.

  • Listen to others point of view.
  • Present the classified view in a professional
    manner.
  • Be respectful, but dont be awed or intimidated.
  • Ask questions both during and outside of the
    meetings.

  • Keep your personal agendas private.
  • If you take on an assignment, follow through.
  • If you do all these things, you will earn the
    respect of others as a valued participant!!

Voice vs. Vote
  • Your voice will always be more important than
    your vote.
  • Many committees do not vote they work by
    consensus. (an opinion held by all or most of
    those present)

Remember . . .
  • You are first a classified employee
  • If participation interferes with your work speak
    with your supervisor and/or the Classified Senate
    President.
  • You are an important member
  • Be a contributor
  • Complete assigned tasks
  • Consider what you can or cannot contribute.
  • If you cannot attend meetings or if you feel that
    you cannot represent classified appropriately,
    ask to be replaced.
