Title: Reading strategies

1
Reading strategies
  • SQ3R

2
Reading difficulty
  • DEFINITION OF LITERACY- The ability to use
    printed and written information
  • to function in society
  • to achieve ones goals
  • to develop ones knowledge and potential.

3
Literacy statistics
  • Below Basic 30 million adults (14 of
    population)
  • no more than the most simple and concrete
    literacy skills
  • Basic 63 million adults (29 of population)
  • can perform simple and everyday literacy
    activities
  • Intermediate 95 million adults (44 of
    population)
  • can perform moderately challenging literacy
    activities
  • Proficient 28 million adults (13 of population)
  • can perform complex and challenging literacy
    activities

4
Which group do you belong to?
  • Currently, you belong to the third group (as do
    most students entering college)
  • Intermediate (44 of population) can perform
    moderately challenging literacy activities
  • Prospectively, you should strive toward belonging
    to the last group
  • Proficient (13 of population) can perform
    complex and challenging literacy activities

5
Reading difficulty
  • We live during an age where technology provides
    ease and convenience.
  • We rely on technology to do the simplest tasks
and we can easily become too relaxed, complacent
    or lazy.
  • And anything that we have to work at, anything
that challenges us, we try to avoidthis is the
    biggest complaint about reading.
  • Lets face it it has to compete with
    television, music, socializing, and/or the
    internet.

6
Reading difficulty
  • Students are frustrated most by their lack of
    understanding or reading comprehension.
  • If you dont understand the material then you
cannot engage with it, and you certainly wont be
    interested by it.
  • But how can you judge the material if you cant
    understand it?
  • Reading comprehension is essential for college
    success.
  • Consider how much reading is necessary for the
courses you are taking now, and what about future
    classes?

7
Reading strategies to accomplish your goal
  • Reading students, or students in general, dont
have to be defeated by difficult material.
  • There are reading strategies that can help you
    conquer difficult reading material.
  • Like SAGE, SQ3R is an important acronym for
    reading students.
  • Traditionally, SQ3R means
  • SURVEY
  • QUESTION
  • READ
  • RECITE
  • REVIEW

8
Sq3r (For the purpose of this course)
  • Survey Preview Material before reading
  • Question Ask and/or anticipate questions
    about the reading.
  • Read Read thoroughly.
  • Recall-Recite-Review Recall and recite details
from the reading. Review the material and any
    questions you came up with.
  • Reread Read again.

9
Survey
  • Read the title and make sure youre familiar with
    the subject.
  • If youre not familiar with the subject, perhaps
you should do a quick search on the internet.
  • Read any headings or subheadings for the
    different sections in the reading.
  • This gives you a quick preview.
  • Most importantly, read the first and last
    sentence of every paragraph.
  • This indicates the topic and main idea.

10
  • Watch out for any typographical signs
  • Underlining
  • Highlighting
  • Bold-faced print
  • Italicized print
  • Take a closer look at illustrations, such as
    charts or graphs.
  • This is a visual representation of key ideas in
the section next to where the chart/graph is
    located.
  • Take notice of listing or numbering
  • This indicates an outline it breaks down the
information youll be reading in simple terms.

11
Questions
  • Predict questions youll during the reading or
    even after.
  • Look up the questions at the end of the reading
so that you can identify the answers as you read.
  • Predict test questions
  • What is the topic?
  • What is the main idea?
  • How does the author support the main idea
    supporting details?

12
Read
  • Read very carefully and very thoroughly.
  • Stop whenever you get tired and refocus.
  • Stop at any point where you stop understanding
    the material and begin again.
  • Stop periodically to review or summarize what
    youve read so far.
  • Review quizzing yourself looking over notes
  • Summarize putting the authors ideas into your
    own words
  • Re-read.

13
High light high light high light
  • All students should make it a habit to underline,
    mark or highlight key ideas.
  • Dont go crazy and highlight what you think might
    be important!
  • Highlight only those terms you believe are
important and signify something to you.
  • Students that arbitrarily mark up the text, dont
learn anything or recall later what theyve
    marked.

14
Recall RECITEReview
  • They all mean pretty much the same thing!
  • After the reading, try to recall
  • The main idea
  • The details that support it
  • Any key concepts
  • Any key terms
  • Make sure that your questions from the
    Questioning Stage have been answered.
  • Predict future test questions.
  • Create an outline.
  • Students that create an outline demonstrate their
    understanding of the material.
  • Demonstrate their understanding of how the
    material has been organized.
  • This will help that student to later recall key
ideas, and participate more readily in class.

15
Re-Read
  • This will reinforce your reading and help you to
    retain key ideas.
  • And it gives you one more opportunity to pick up
any details you may have missed during the first
    reading.
