HOME LIFE
  • By Filippa

We are FAMILY!
2
Getting on with your parents
  • Do you ever have problems at home?
  • Do you ever get in a fight with a family member?
  • Does mom ever want you to stay home instead of
  • going to the movies?
  • Do you have to do house chores, and dont have
  • any time with friends?
  • These are questions involving problems you might
    have at home.

3
Peoples thoughts Are these one of your problems?
'My dad doesn't seem to realise that I need more
than just going to school, coming home and
looking after my brothers and cleaning and
cooking. He'd worry I might get into trouble with
boys if I go out, and it will ruin our family's
reputation and I won't get a husband. But I'm not
like that anyway. And I need a life, something
for me not for everyone else.' (Fouzia, 13)
'Everyone at school thought it was great at my
house. They could come round when they wanted cos
my mum and dad weren't there till late. And my
parents weren't bothered if I went to school or
if I came home. People thought I was really lucky
having all that freedom. It was good sometimes,
but it felt like they didn't really care about me
at all. Really I wish I could have used my
parents as an excuse not to go out sometimes,
without loosing face.' (Josh, 14)
'I'm with long-term foster-carers now. I like
these ones. I've had a few temporary ones, and I
just got settled and it was time to move on. It's
hard when you get attached to people and you have
to move - it takes you longer and longer to trust
people. Hopefully I will be able to stay here
till I want to leave.' (Chloe, 15)

What is going on?
  • As you get older you might start thinking that
  • your parents are getting stricter and unfair at
  • times. You might feel they wont always let you do
  • what you want to. Why not? Well, probably
  • because they just care about you want to keep you
  • safe. Its a simple answer. Even if you ask
    yourself
  • keep me safe from what? Feeling safe and cared
  • for is actually good for your mental and
    emotional
  • health!

5
What to do
  • Try talking to your parents or an adult
  • you trust.
  • If you are feeling stressed try doing
  • something creative or physical to get your
  • mind of things, like drawing down your
  • thoughts with music, or playing a sport.
  • If you dont have a good friend, parent or adult
  • to talk to try getting help from some websites.
  • (there are some tips at the end of the
    presentation.)

6
Divorce
7
  • Most families grow up with two
  • parents. But as the years go on
  • more and more people get
  • divorced. In year 2000 around
  • one out of four children under
  • five years had divorced parents.
  • And Seven out of ten children
  • were aged ten or under when
  • their parents Divorced. In total
  • 22 out of 100 have only one
  • parent.
  • So your not alone in the world!

8
DO NOT THINK THIS!
Whatever happens and whatever people say. You are
not to blame!
9
WHY?
  • There could be thousands of reasons why your
  • parents split apart. Try asking your mom or dad,
  • they can probably explain the best and true
  • reason!
  • Sometimes people fall out off love and its better
to move then to argue. If your lucky your parents
might still be friends and see each other!
  • Your parents are arguing and they can never
agree, things just dont seem to work so they
    have to divorce.

10
Peoples thoughtsyour never alone in the world!
  • 'When my parents split up it felt like I had
    split up inside.' (Abbie, 11)

'Mum wasn't mum anymore. It was like she was the
kid, and I was the grown up. She couldn't really
cope when dad walked out.' (Sarah, 14)
'My mum walked out on us when we were small. Dad
has been like a mum and dad to us, but I can't
help thinking was it because of me she left. She
wants to see us now, but I don't want to see her.
I'm too angry. She can't just see us again like
we're lost property or something.' (Danny, 15)
11
  • . Just remember whatever people say or do, they
    will always love you.
