  • New England Common Assessment Program
  • RIs state assessment
  • Required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act
    (NCLB)
  • School-performance classifications are determined
    by the results of the tests
  • Middle School students are tested in the month of
    October
  • Developed in partnership with NH and VT

Two Basic Types of Educational Tests
  • Criterion or Standards-Referenced Has the
    student learned the skills or achieved the
    standard?
  • NECAP is a Standards-Referenced Test

  • Reading and Mathematics grades 3-8
  • Writing grades 5 and 8
  • Variety of Item Types
  • Reading multiple choice and constructed response
  • Mathematics multiple choice, short answer (one

  • Intents
  • Evaluate how well students and schools are
    achieving learning targets
  • Designed to provide detailed school level results
    and accurate summary information about individual
    students and instructional practices
  • An outside data source supplementing classroom
    performance

  • 4- Proficient with Distinction
  • 3- Proficient
  • 2- Partially Proficient
  • 1-Substantially Below Proficient

Level 4 Proficient with Distinction
  • Demonstrate the prerequisite knowledge and skills
    needed to participate and excel in the grade
    level classroom
  • Errors made by this student are few and minor

Level 3 Proficient
  • Demonstrate minor gaps in prerequisite knowledge
    and skills needed to participate and excel in the
    grade level classroom
  • Likely that any gaps in prerequisite knowledge
    can be addressed during typical classroom
    instruction

  • Demonstrate gaps in prerequisite knowledge and
    skills needed to participate and perform
    successfully in the grade level classroom
  • Additional instructional support may be necessary
