Title: Graphics Support And Visualization

1
Graphics Support And Visualization
  • J Kallenbach

2
Project Drivers Scope
  • Help (consulting/coding) on graphics applications
    as requested
  • Help with generation of publication pictures
    (Public Affairs)
  • Revival of 3D applications and outreach (also w/
    Public Affairs)

3
Project Deliverables Status
  • Full-feature event display (FLARE)
  • Prototype has been shown to good reviews
  • Code (ROOT scripts and support files) in CVS
  • Uses ROOT on Linux requires v4_02 or later
  • Pictures will be of use to Public Affairs
    (splashy)
  • Will also show nicely in 3D
  • Waiting to see if FLARE has some life
  • Port of NTF visualization code and X Windows
    framework from SGI to Linux
  • Port looked like 80 hr job at outset
  • Port from SGI GLForms with cc to Linux xforms
    with gcc was fast (compiling)
  • Major snag encountered on first Linux link
  • Move off of IRIX GL will take some time may
require a nearly complete rewrite of a few key
    files

4
Project Deliverables Status - 2
  • Public Affairs pics
  • We are able to make single pictures
  • Still working on cookbook (getting close though)
  • CDF, D0 involved
  • FLARE output is usable
  • MINOS probably wont be part of it
  • 3D
  • Last attempt became seriously hindered by Linux
    upgrade.
  • Currently investigating migration to setup in use
    at UIUC and other sites
  • Based on commodity hardware and software (no
    proprietary software or video cards)
  • Will become part of a 20-facility GeoWall
    consortium - http//geowall.geo.lsa.umich.edu/
  • Evaluation of complete system in progress
  • ROOT pictures (or any other GL application)
    should display as is

Risks
  • NTF
  • This may result in some lost time. It is
slightly unclear whether the task at hand can
actually be completed in a reasonable amount of
time. It may turn out to be better to pay SGI
    the 1000/yr.
  • 3D
  • I THINK most of the risk has been removed this
    time around
  • The procedure is now documented, supported by a
    lot of people
  • The use of OpenGL and commodity HW instead of
Inventor and video board make this attempt
low-risk. Upgrade purchases can be re-used in
    case of discontinuation.
  • About 1000 at stake
