What Needs Managing?
  • Inappropriate Behaviour
  • Speeding and other fines

  • Correct vehicle for intended use e.g 2wd vs. 4wd

How Are Drivers Managed
  • Stages Of Driver Management
  • Policy - (based on employee type) We ensure that
    all staff are fully informed of all relevant
    policies and requirements
  • Induction We ensure that prior to using a
    Telstra vehicle that staff have met certain
    information criteria
  • Provision or order - We ensure that before a
    vehicle is provided or ordered for a driver that
    they are fully aware of all requirements regards
    that vehicle
  • In Service Return We monitor vehicles
    regularly and use this information to manage
    drivers and vehicles
  • Ongoing Communication Drivers need to be
    reminded from time to time of conditions to
    reinforce behaviour

Provide Policy Regulation
  • Corporate Policy - High Level
  • Overarching company policy
  • Applies to staff, managers business units
  • Mainly around responsibilities and behaviour
  • HS - Targets Auditing
  • Incidents driver safety
  • e.g. 6 monthly safety checks
  • e.g. accident DAF targets
  • HR Fleet - Specific agreements and monitoring
  • Salary Sacrifice agreement policy
  • Operational driver agreement policy
  • Pool usage policy (administered by business
    units)
  • Maintenance accident policy
  • Specific vehicle fittings policies (e.g use of
    barrier)

Provide Induction
  • All staff must complete an online
    driving course which covers
  • Policy requirements relating to vehicle use
  • Driving Safety safety tips!

  • Reminder that all state federal road laws apply
  • Pre-employment driver checks We do not have a
    fixed policy on this but support it.

Manage Vehicle Provision
  • Operational drivers sign agreements covering
    major policy items and requirements such as
  • terms of use e.g. take home policy
  • penalties for non compliance
  • correct process procedure e.g care of vehicle
  • Salary Sacrifice vehicle order form includes
    agreement to specific policy as condition of
    order
  • Includes requirements that apply to anyone
    driving the vehicle, including family members
  • Very specific around accidents, vehicle condition
    and approved drivers (and penalties)

In Service/On Return Monitoring
  • Telstra commonly report and act on
  • Complaints (Driver Safety Awareness Program)
  • Traffic Fines (mailed to us)
  • Accidents
  • Poor driving history
  • Missed servicing
  • Vehicle condition 6 monthly
  • End of lease inspection UWT issues
  • Good data and processes are required to make this
    work well. Drivers take intervention to heart!

Driver Interventions
  • Accidents - 2nd at fault in 12 months and
    subsequent - up to 500 contribution towards
    accident each time
  • Fines - Warning letters for speeding and red
    light fines direct to employee. Excessive fines
    reported to manager
  • 6 Monthly Safety Check - Employee to Manager -
    placed against vehicle history, issues followed
    up
  • Complaints (DSAP) full follow up with manager and
    feedback loop. All complaints MUST be closed.
    Will soon include vehicle environmental
    complaints/issues as well

Driver Interventions
  • Early return fee passed on to employee from lease
    company if unit returned early
  • End of lease contribution to excessive UWT if
    damage above limits found (ss)
  • DUI accident - employee pays full cost can
    include damage to third party property and
    vehicle
  • Specific Training as required can be arranged
    where skill deficiency identified
  • Telstra disciplinary processes for specific
    serious issues up to and including termination

  • Monthly Newsletter - driving safety, alerts and
    policy - All staff
  • Substantial web site information all policy
    information available online - All staff
  • Training/Induction Course All staff
  • Glove box guide Covering the basics of vehicle
    policy and operation All staff

  • Driver safety book (Drive Ability Russell
    White) in Glove box of cars for next 6-12 months

Conclusion - Driver Management
  • Telstra manage our drivers by ensuring that they
    have appropriate tools, information, policy and
    support to ensure that they can manage their
    vehicles to meet Telstra's expectations and to
    meet their needs all through the provisioning
    cycle
  • We back this up with monitoring, exception
    reporting and clear guidelines for follow up of
    any driver breaches
  • Most drivers want to do the right thing they
    just need the info and support to achieve it.
